Current house (which we're about to rent out): granite, but it's tile granite so stuff gets stuck between the tiles.

New house: quartz. Yay!

@SugarplumsMom: We've been in our place for 4 years now. The counter tops pre-date us but we did extend an area of the counter and have a new portion poured. It's so low maintenance! We put some sort of protectant on it once but that's really been it. And I'm not a crazy cleaner so I don't wipe it down a lot either. ETA: I was looking for a pic on my phone but don't seem to have one. I can take one tonight if you want!

We have white Carrara marble. (We rent). I do like it, but I wouldn't choose it. It has certainly developed a patina and if it was newly installed and mine, it would drive me crazy to keep it unblemished. But it has a lovely feel and brightens up the otherwise dark kitchen (we have medium/dark toned wood cabinets and a marble subway tile backsplash)

We have laminate (we rent). But when we do get a house, we'll steer away from natural stone and their porous and maintenance aspects. Perhaps quartz or just a nicer looking laminate for us. My mother's one regret about her new kitchen island was the granite top seam that is slowly separating and has to be redone occasionally.

Maybe I'm weird, but I like to see if my counters are really clean and granite and natural stone patterns really camouflage that

@LindsayInNYC: Yeah, I googled it too :) It looks like an interesting DIY project though! I don't know if I'd be up for it, but yeah, it seems like it can be just as expensive as granite if you pay someone! Darn!

@MamaMoose: @Bookworm: I just googled it since we're looking to add a wine fridge in and would need new countertop poured. It does seem labor intensive. Our kitchen is small so I'm hoping it's not terribly bad.

@regberadaisy: ours has been in since 2005 and so far so good. No scratching. I don't put hot pots on it. I think technically you can but I prefer to use a trivet to be safe. We also coat it once a year. I think the coating is made from beeswax but I don't know for sure. Hubs does it.

@Bookworm: definitely cheaper if you DIY but I think the labor costs are high if you have a pro do it because they have to build the molds, pour the concrete, level it, wait for it to set, etc.
