another salt lamp fan here. I use a himalayan pink one, has a real nice soft glow. the only downside is in that in humid weather (like stinking hot humidity) it can leave salt rings wherever it is.

We started using these when my boys were 2.5. The nice thing is they can turn them on again on their own if they wake up at night. I like that they turn off on their own so it doesn't disrupt their sleep.

I use a salt lamp in my room. You could put it on a timer ... there is some hippie dippie goodness from it too! I'm excited to have it for the early days of breastfeeding. Just the right amount of light to be able to see, but it feels so calming.

DD has an Ikea spoka light in her room. We turn it off after bed time but it could stay on all night if you wanted. You can have it cycle through all of the colors or pick one. Pink and purple are both options on the one I have.

My girls each have an Ikea LED nightlight that they keep on their bedframe. We also used to use some pink paper star lights from Target that we hung around the closet, but they were too bright when DD2 (used to the dark) moved into their shared room.

How about a color changing alarm clock that gives off a glow? We have this one and it provides a decent amount of light.

These plug in night lights project a fairly large circle picture on the ceiling and they usually come in a bunch of different designs/characters. I have an aquarium one and it was super cheap. You can change where the circle is projected too so it could be on the ceiling or on the wall.

My son uses an LED 3D puzzle of the Empire State Building as a night light. It's hooked up to a remote control thing that he controls from his bed, so he can turn it off when he wants to without getting out of bed.

It isn't super bright, though, but I'd thought I'd throw it out there as another alternative.

@pwnstar: I agree. We leave my son's closet light on as his "night light" and have noticed no difference in our electric bill.

@PinkElephant: As an fyi, it costs just pennies (average is 3-8 cents, depending on the type of bulb) to leave a light on all night.

My DH just bought some battery powered LED candles to try for dim lighting in DD's room and for him to read by. Jury is still out on them, but he is also considering stick-on battery powered lights.

My 4yo used to love absolute darkness now needs the light on... we have a dimmer on the lamp next to his bed, like this:

[attach=1584/17/oj7pmj.160x160.41gCDoU-joL._AC_US160_.jpg]

The good thing is when we travel we can bring it with us and usually dim whatever lamp is in the room.

We also have added (for the holidays) a little LED light that is battery operated and has a timer, like you mentioned... They last surprisingly long with 3 AAA batteries, posting a pic of something similar:

We have a kinderglo nightlight that's great. No doggies or penguins but they do have colour change options and purple is a choice, and a good variety of cute choices.. It's default setting is to turn off after 45 minutes but you can set it to stay on all night. I can only speak to the blue because that's the only colour my son will let us put it on but it provides a reasonable amount of light.

My DDs (2.5 and 4.5) are used to sleeping in a shared room with dimmer lights and a glass door to the hallway....ie., not a very dark room. Their new (separate) bedrooms get REALLY dark at night, and plug in nightlights aren't cutting it. I've been leaving their closet lights on, but this is killing my electricity bill.

If you use a low light bedside or floor lamp of some sort as a night light, I'd love to see it/hear where you bought it! Bonus points for pink, purple, penguins, or doggies. :) I'm even wondering about some kind of battery-operated LED marquee light, but I think most of those switch off on a timer.

Thanks!
