My son's pediatrician also recommends staying away from milk for 3-4 days because vomiting can cause you to temporarily lose the enzymes that digest dairy. She says start off after a couple days with yogurt and then go back to half the amount of milk you normally give a couple days after that to ease back into it.

Some flavors of pedialyte taste really salty and are gross - the only one my son will drink is fruit punch.

@littlebug: thanks! In my mind 3-4 days without milk seems like a lot of lost calories, but no milk is way better than the alternative-continued tummy problems...which ultimately probably mean the calories aren't getting absorbed anyway!

@CarrieLouWho: Last time my DD had a stomach bug, she would not drink pedialyte. I got store brand clear strawberry flavor. I can't blame her because it was disgusting. I was hesitant to buy something with dye in it, but we just bought grape and she likes it! Tastes like Gatorade with a little saltiness to me.

@littlebug: she said it tastes awful and why would we give her something that tastes so bad. Gatorade tastes better, is cheaper and does the same thing.
So I felt like bad mom bc I gave her pedialyte. I did taste and didn't think it was terrible. But hubby likes Gatorade, so we always have it in the house.
Personally, I think pedialyte is fine... I thinky dr just feels strongly about how yucky pedialytt tastes :)

@CarrieLouWho: Did the doctor say why no Pedialyte? Just curious.

Our dr is anti-pedialyte and says to do Gatorade and water. We stick to that for about a week. I hate the sugar, but it helps hydrate and it's only a week. She's always fine when we go back to milk.

@bisous: D had a stomach bug that ended up putting him the ER getting IV fluids. The doctor told us to stay away from dairy for 3-4 days! She said pedialyte, water, or watered-down juice.

@blackbird: For a few days? Until the bottle is gone?

I just feel like everytime I think a bug is gone, it comes back. I do pedialyte the day she is sick but normally go back to regular diet quickly.

My LO is recovering from a stomach bug. It was pretty mild-vomited once over night into Tuesday morning and had one loose stool in the morning and seemed back to normal. We sent her with whole milk to daycare today and they sent her home due to a major loose stool after naptime.

What liquids do you give your LO when recovering from a bug? Is milk a definite no-no?
