We didn't want to get a second crib. We would have kept him in it longer otherwise but he is doing great in his bed so it wasn't a big deal at all., We moved him directly to a twin because we already had a mattress and figured it would get used longer.

We went straight into a floor bed at 8 months, and it was one of the best choices we ever made. Totally avoided the toddler bed switch hassle. I'd recommend it to anyone.

We just switched two days ago and it's been going great. LO is 2.5 and has never tried to climb out. The only reason we switched him is that the bed we were planning to get him was on sale and we didn't have room to store it. I thought that he might have a hard time because he loved his crib and said he didn't want a big boy bed but so far so good.

we switched at around 21 months due to climbing. the switch was horrible, but there were a lot of factors at play (international travel, sleep regression already happening, etc.).

oddly, LO doesn't get up out of bed by himself to play/mess around/destroy. i don't know if part of that is due to the fact that when we first transitioned to the bed, i stayed in there one night and continually put him back in bed every time he got out.

We switched to a twin at 33 months, 3 months before LO2 was due. I would have kept him in there longer if we hadn't needed the crib. He never tried to climb out and slept really well in the crib (that is, after he turned 1).

I felt like it was the right time at 2 years and 9 months because I wanted her to get in and out by herself. I was nervous about the switch because she never had any issues in her crib but things are exactly the same.

Nothing in particular. One day DH said he was going to make her crib into a toddler bed (when she was around 20 months), and just did it. LO wasn't climbing out or throwing things out of her crib really, but has had no problems with the transition. It really has helped me be able to put her to bed with my big pregnant belly though!

F is 2 (I think he and your LO are the same birthday month?) and we switched to the crib mattress in the floor at 15ish months. He HATED his crib and it was a PITA to sooth him in it so we ditched it. He only ever got out in the middle of the night and we co-slept the rest of the night.
So he's 2 now and we got him a twin mattress. He sleeps so well in it (still on the floor) and doesn't wander around. Although sometimes we catch him playing quietly with toys after he wakes up from a nap. (We did also leave only quiet, restful type toys and books in his room. Nothing too entincing for him in there these days.)

Miss A just decided she wanted to sleep in her big bed one night and hasn't looked back! I think having always had a big bed in her room has helped and I would often share it with her when she woke during the night so it wasn't a huge transition for her.

Only because I'm pregnant with #2 and don't want to buy another crib. Otherwise I could've left her in there forever because she loved being in her crib and never tried to climb out. The transition has been super good though - she stays in her bed til I come get her in the mornings.

We just ordered her Big Girl set during the Black Fri weekend sale:) We had been planning on it bc we need her crib for LO2 - I'm not buying another crib AND Big Girl Furniture at some point. So LO2 is getting the crib, and H is getting Big Girl Furniture. We know she's ready bc she just doesn't have enough room in the crib. And she pulls her bumper away from the crib and uses it as a pillow, but she really doesn't have room for a real pillow in there bc she and the Dream Blanket and her minnie dolls take up all the space. So when the set I'm in love with went on sale this weekend, we just bit the bullet:) We're not doing a toddler bed...We got a bigger size so she could use it for longer since the furniture was an investment.

she started refusing to go to sleep in her crib after a week of co-sleeping with us while on vacation, around 23 months. then she figured out how to climb out, but not how to land safely so she ended up with a gigantic purple bruise on her forehead. and that is when her crib days were over.

We're moving DD after the holidays, so she'll be about 26-27 months. She can easily climb out of her crib, so we have it turned around so the higher part of the crib is in the front and she can't climb out. I'm dreading the move but I can't keep getting her in and out from the high crib as my LO #2 belly starts to grow. She seems excited about the bed, and we're talking about it a lot, so hopefully it's smooth.

I switched at 15 months, before L was even walking, because I was expecting his brother in 2 months and wanted to make the switch ahead of time so it wasn't so many changes at once. People thought I was nuts, but I can count on one hand the number of times he has gotten out of bed on his own. I think doing it before he could walk (he was a late walker, obviously) was a blessing in disguise because at that point he physically couldn't climb out, and even now that he can, it doesn't occur to him to do so.

We do have a side rail up because he does a fair amount of rolling in his sleep!

@pinkb: well we had another bed in her room at the time and she always asked to go into it instead. We couldn't switch her until we moved because we had a lot of random stuff stored in her room that could pose a threat. CIO just wasn't really doing the trick in the crib and we still haven't perfected bedtime even in the twin bed, but bedtime is less traumatic overall.

He's 30 months and we still haven't switched him because he never climbs out. Night sleep is great and naps are a crapshoot (sometimes he naps and sometimes he doesn't) but I don't see that improving with a bed. He delays before nap and bed as well but again I just don't think a bed is the solution. After baby brother comes we will ask him if he wants to change. We have all of the stuff for his bed just haven't changed him.

@Radish: Was there a way that you knew it was the crib? LO (23 months)has been having a really hard time with nap and bedtime the last couple of weeks. She doesn't have many words so she cant communicate really what the issue is. But she cries and throws her stuff out of the crib, she even cried and makes herself vomit. It is a real struggle :( Could it be the crib? I have been bad lately and hold her till she falls asleep for nap.

We switched at 22 months because she hated the crib and bedtime was such a battle. We have very little in her room so when we leave her to fall asleep she may get up and mess with a few things, but she always goes back to her bed eventually.

We switched at 23 months because we were in the process of moving (over the course of several months!) and were staying with family where our only practical sleeping option for DD1 was a full size, normal height bed with guard rails on it. She loved it and had absolutely no difficulties transitioning to it... She then transitioned to a toddler bed height fold out camping bed at our next short term family stay, before going into a normal twin bed now in our new house. None of it has been an issue as we just talked it up a lot in the initial few days and she loved it.

LO loves her crib and has never attempted to climb out (I don't think it's even occurred to her to be honest). She was 2 in September.

Lately, she's been tossing things out of the crib (I think - or they're falling out) and she can't sleep til she gets them back. Comfort items. I'm so freaking exhausted, and seriously debated taking the front off the damn crib so she can get them herself!! But then I figured it's better that she's contained..

Anyway, what made you switch your LO over?
