@TemperanceBrennan: our basket is by Picnic at Ascot. It wouldn't be helpful for this weekend, but if you want one for the longterm, they're on One Kings Lane pretty regularly at this time of year.

@Cherrybee: Your husband's comment made me lol  and I love your list.

It's funny you recommended a basket because I was browsing online trying to find something cheap. I looked at Target (do you have them in England?) and found one I liked, but then I looked at the price. It was $349.99!!!

http://www.target.com/p/windsor-basket-service-for-4-navy-blue/-/A-10859843#prodSlot=medium_1_12&tempterm=picnic+basket

@TemperanceBrennan: The first thing I was going to say is a red and white checkered blanket!!!! You also need a basket to put everything in!

Well, I know a lot about this kind of thing, being English and all! :silly:

- Scones, clotted cream and jam
- Strawberries
- Cucumber sandwiches, crustless of course, cut into triangle quarters (to eat daintily!)
- A flask of tea! (to serve in china cups and saucers)
- Teddy bears (for Teddy Bear's picnic)

I just asked DH what he associates with a traditional English picnic and he said "wasps and disappointment".

@yoursilverlining: Martha Stewart suggested cold fried chicken on her site too, and I've never heard of it as a picnic food before. Sounds tasty though.
I love the suggestion of nuts. I would not have thought of that!

I used to do huge picnic spreads. My go to was to buy a large round loaf of bread, cut the top off, rip out the inside bread and then fill it with basil, fresh mozzarella, cold cuts, more cheese, olives, more basil, and then place the top back on once the layers were filled to the top and then wrap it in aluminum foil and pressed down with a heavy sauce pan in the fridge. That way all the flavors meld together and it makes cutting it easier. Then the day of you cut it into wedges. it's a gorgeous presentation.

My picnic standards are caprese kabobs (short skewers of mozzarella balls, cherry tomatoes and basil leaves), fruit salsa and cinnamon chips (a variety of chopped fruit and a tablespoon of sugar to bring out juices, baked tortillas with butter/cinnamon sugar), grain salads and cookies.

A group of my friends and I are having a picnic this Friday and I want to go overboard. We are going to a local brewery that has a beautiful patio/lawn overlooking a lake. They encourage you to bring in your own food and non-alcoholic drinks. (They only sell beer) It's going to be six adults and three kids.

What is part of a perfect picnic for you? What are your favorite foods to bring? Any other general picnic tips?
