@Mrs D: our kind was about 3k w/tax. I talked the guy down because I knew Costco carried the same (older) mattress model for cheaper, so he agreed to beat the price by 200.

We got the tempurpedic contour elite - it is amazing! This is our second tempurpedic - our first was the firmer basic imoption, which our son now has. I LOVE this new mattress!!

We have a Sealy Optimum memory foam mattress, and we absolutely love it! It's a bit more pricey than most mattresses (but less than other memory foam brands), and my super frugal husband hasn't once regretted the money we spent on it. He prefers a softer mattress, and I generally like one that's firmer, but we're both very happy with this one. I have back problems, and this mattress has been great for my back.

The only downside is that because it doesn't spring back, it was harder getting in and out of bed immediately post c-section. :)

@Mrs D: Honestly it is the best investment we have ever made. Both of us sleep much better, my SO snores less and the firmness hasn't changed since we bought it. Ours was considerably less than $5k because we had access to club pricing through a family member and we had a platform bed frame so the foundation wasn't necessary

@Mrs D: I feel like the tempurpedic was worth it, although o had never heard of some of these other brands. But we both have back pain and both feel like this made a big difference. We bought ours almost four years ago and I still lay down at night and think, ahhh bed, I love you. (That could almost be related to being exhausted from two young kids who suck at sleeping). I want to say our king was more than that but they may have come down a little in price. And we were able to do interest free financing for a year. I really love it and have never once regretted it.

@Anya: good to know! I read a great review of the Leesa on sweethome. when we visited the showroom, we actually liked the Sapira even better--it's made by Leesa but has spring coils in it. felt a little more structured but still super soft :)

@petitenoisette: @Mrs. Pen: @LCTBQE: I've been extremely happy with our Leesa. Here is a good comparison. For us it more or less came down to which one had a better Black Friday deal at the time + I think the Leesa is supposed to be a little cooler.

@petitenoisette: That's so true. Naive young me bought the softest, plushest mattress when we were engaged. I loved it at first... but after a year or two I realized it only makes my back pain worse. And I have tons of back pain during pregnancies and it's been rough! I definitely need something more supportive.

@Mrs. Pen: @LCTBQE: When I was researching prior to buying it seemed that leesa>casper> tuft&needle (with price points following) but I'm guessing there really isn't much of a difference!

@JennyPenny: I think that's another thing about testing out in a store is that what might feel nice and cozy initially isn't actually great for your back long term!

@petitenoisette: we went to the soho showrooms this weekend and tried both Leesa and Casper (they're like 2 blocks away from each other)--the Leesa was softer, otherwise they felt pretty similar. I didn't know it was supposedly nicer!

We got a mattress from Amerisleep online because we wanted memory foam and they have well-reviewed plant-based memory foam with really low off-gassing. When we first got it I was a bit bummed because it didn't have that immediate "ahhh, so comfy" feeling that I look for in stores, but after sleeping on it a few months I love it. I was 4ish months pregnant when we got it and had already started getting some low back pain, but it went away within a week of having the new mattress and hasn't come back yet at 6.5 months.

Something from a local furniture store... but planning to upgrade to a king and I'm going to get a Tuft and Needle mattress! My sister has one and I fell in love when I laid on it. Now my brother got one and he loves it too. It's a more natural mattress, and so affordable! Only $750 for the king.

We were looking for something on the softer side as well, but not something that felt like a sink hole (which was what a lot of the plush, ultra plush, luxury plush mattresses lean towards).
we have a Hotel Collection by Aireloom via macys. I just went through an exhaustive search. Sent one mattress back. The memory foam ones are comfortable, but they are terrible horrible no good very bad for of-gassing (even if they don't smell).. Find latex if you can.
Google The Old Bed Guy. Its a great resource.
He highly recommends Charles P Rogers but its hard if you don't live in the NYC area (although they have a fantastic return policy).

Anyway, we are totally happy with it. I also hate bed shopping I feel like it's impossible to tell if you actually like a bed by lying on it for a minute in a store so I figured that we might as well just try it sight unseen. It worked out!

We also splurged and got a king size tempurpedic and I LOVE it. I think we have the second firmest option. It's helped both of our back pain a lot. The only down side is it's harder to roll over and stuff since you get so settled into the memory foam (really that was only an issue when I was big and pregnant). Totally worth the money for us.

Our newest is a Casper, and it is too firm for me. My husband likes it though.

Our previous mattress, which is now my LO's, is a combination spring/foam mattress from Ikea. I like a medium to soft mattress and think it's super comfortable. Unfortunately, it was discontinued and they only have firm and extra firm options now.
