@PurplePeony: @locavore_mama: Yeah, here I though beef stew would be one of those super cheap dinners! haha. I think buying a chuck roast and cutting it myself may be my best bet.

@Marfi: Confession time: I'm from the hollers of eastern KY, though I live in the northeast now. Think of all the Appalachian stereotypes you can and that's my family. I have only made one type of stew in my life and that would be squirrel stew in the crockpot with my grandfather. And it was delicious. :D

I usually buy a big chunk of Chuck roast and cut it up myself. It actually is more expensive than you think it should be! I think on sale it's usually $3 something / lb?

Red wine to de glaze is a must. :)

@ZombieBullfrogHoller: I'm not gonna lie. Whe I read the title I was thinking you meant type as I from what animal and I was a little worried. At least it was just me going crazy. Any how we use English cut short ribs.

Generally, stew beef comes from a lean, tough cut that breaks down and gets tender when it's cooked low and slow. Mostly you see chuck roast, or sometimes bottom roast. It's actually better to get a full piece of meat and cut it up yourself, IMO, because the already-cubed stuff tends to be really different sizes and won't cook evenly. If you cut it yourself, you can get the size cubes you want. But I do sometimes buy already-cubed, I just try to cut down some of the bigger pieces before I throw them in the pot.

@Cherrybee: Cubed stewing steak...maybe that's what the label on this said. Thanks!

I use cubed stewing steak. It becomes tender when you cook it slowly.

So I've been trying to make monthly slow cooker dinner plans and was thinking of making beef stew one night this week. I have never made beef stew in my life and am pretty ignorant when it comes to types and cuts of meat, actually. So, the recipe said "stew beef" and when I asked the guys at the meat counter they showed me where it was, but what they pointed out said something like "cubed steak" and was like 5.60 for 1.18 lbs. Does that sound right? What meat do you use for beef stew?
