My daughter has been asking to watch the "two frogs movie" lately (The Princess and the Frog), but she doesn't like the Shadow Man or his song. She also doesn't like Marshmallow in Frozen. She tells me "I don't like this part", not "this is too scary".

K used to scream every time Nemo got captured, but she knows it's coming now and doesn't get phased at all. Instead, I try to use it as a teaching point "see what happens when you go too far away from mommy/daddy and don't listen when we say 'come here'?" :P

Never used to be scared by Little Mermaid's Urulsa part (probably too young?) but she did have a period of being terrified of birds because of the ending.

I personally hate a lot of The Lion King, but she and DH like to watch together - I make him FF a lot of parts.

LILO and stitch is scary. The girls also think despicable me is scary. We definitely can't watch that movie with the turtles that adventure around the world because my older kid bawls the whole time.

LO was a tiny bit afraid of Finding Nemo the first few times we saw it so I would sit with her and talk her through that part. She didn't like the giant marshmallow looking monster in Frozen.

My kid LOVES the Lion King, and always says that Simba's daddy is hurt and can't get up. She always gets a bit jumpy when Scar first appears in the opening scenes, and calls him naughty Scar.

The funniest is that she absolutely loves Mulan, asks to watch it all the time. She's not scared of the fighting or the Huns, but is PETRIFIED of the matchmaker! She hides behind the couch and yells at me to fast forward it haha

We haven't let DD watch any tv/movies yet, but I remember being terrified of The Wizard of Oz (flying monkeys), The Princess Bride (the pit of despair), and Labyrinth (the baby being stolen) when I was a kid. I think those are geared toward somewhat older kids though...but I was in middle school before I saw The Princess Bride again and enjoyed it, and in college before I watched Labyrinth again!

@hilsy85: my son only made it through 20 minutes of Cars before we had to turn it off. He made it through 5 minutes of Planes and just 2 minutes of Frozen!!! He is a gigantic scardey cat! But I think there is something about animated films that really scares him because he has seen both Mary Poppins and The Sound of Music all the way through several times.

Nothing yet! It's weird, because she's a very cautious and emotional person, but movies don't really scare her. She recognizes that parts are sad/scary/bad, but she isn't fearful or anything... it's almost like she understands it's part of the movie?

My LO gets scared by things that are very loud, but in movies with scary characters or parts, she wants to see the scary part over and over and over again – like confronting her fears, until she is comfortable with it. Her favorite movie right now is The Wizard of Oz, which I thought she would find 1) boring, and then 2) terrifying (flying monkeys, anyone?!). Instead, she LOVES it.
Same with The Little Mermaid, which she also loves. She was scared of Ursula at first, but now she will yell at the TV “Ursula witch, you are not being nice! You are not being a good friend, that is not nice” when Ursula is being nasty. Lol

So, I dunno. Maybe my kid is a weirdo, but when something scares her, she wants to face it head on and watch it until she isn’t scared anymore. Which is think is probably pretty healthy, so I let her do it. So, hard to say what she really finds scary, because the fear doesn’t last.

She used to find the scene in Frozen where Marshmallow chases Olaf, Anna and Kristof down the mountain scary - - but then she begged us to replay that scene 100 times and now laughs and scolds him "oh, silly marshmallow! Marshmallows are so tasty!" :silly:

I loooooooooooove horror movies, so maybe she gets it from me. Not sure!

My little sister is almost 16 and still hasn't seen The Little Mermaid. She was one of those kids that got frightened of movies easily, so she just avoided it on principle.

For what it's worth, I've read that from a psychological point of view, some scary movies and books are good for kids. Something about it helping them learn to process fear in a healthy way.

He's been ok with most movies so far (he's seen Finding Nemo, Lion King, Toy Story, and Wall-E). I think he doesn't quite "get" that Nemo's mom and Simba's dad die in those movies. He also seemed ok with Beauty and the Beast, but I stopped letting him watch it because I think the Beast is too scary for him. One day he caught about 10 seconds of the bear scene in Brave and freaked. That was over a week ago and he still talks about the bear - "I don't like that bear on tv."

Why are so many kids' movies so scary?

My kids were terrified by the scene in Finding Nemo where Nemo was kidnapped and his mom died. Come to think of it, that's every kid's worst nightmare! To this day, my daughter refuses to watch Finding Nemo - even if I start it after that scene.

I watched "The Little Engine That Could" with my son years ago, and he was scared witless by this character called the Nightmare Train. Who would put a Nightmare Train in a movie called The Little Engine that Could?! I thought maybe my son was the only one that was scared but I went to Amazon, and it's filled with complaints from parents who said their kids had nightmares for weeks!
