@catlady: we didn't have the snuggly insert, just the bassinet level (which is really just the mattress at a higher level) and it was totally fine.

@gingerbebe: ha that was pretty much our method of transitioning sleep things too- well it's all gone to hell and can't get worse, may as well (move out of the rock and play/ ditch the swaddle/ ditch the sleep suit...)

We got a hand me down bassinet but there are moms constantly unloading them for like $20 on my local mom FB resale group. DS2 was in my arms or in a RNP for 3 weeks, then the bassinet until 3 months, and he's been in a PNP with the Dream on Me mattress this last month.

Basically we transitioned every time his sleep went to hell., since it was garbage anyway. We moved him from the RNP to the bassinet during the 3 week growth spurt (used a tight swaddle, warm rice socks along his legs, and lined the bassinet with a dirty shirt of mine). Then we ditched the swaddling at the 6 week growth spurt slash Wonder Week 8. Then we moved him to the PNP at the point where he was moving and thrashing a lot in the bassinet (i.e. when he was gearing up to attempt rolling). Now he spins and rolls round and round in the PNP at 4 months so he's happy.

We had a cradle for LO1, and I loved it! I was able to rock it back and forth, and it soothed her. Plus it was a lot smaller than a PNP.

I have the same question--I'm also thinking of getting the Halo bassinet--it looks so nice! With lo1, we used the bassinet from our UB stroller for the first month, but didn't really have space in our room for it so transitioned to the crib after just 1 month. we have a bigger master bedroom now so i'm hoping to share room with baby longer (esp since los will be sharing a room), but I don't know that I trust the UB bassinet for longer-term sleep, since it doesn't have the mesh sides...we have a bjorn travel crib rather than standard pnp but the mattress is so low to the ground that I def don't want to use that in newborn days! we never used/had an rnp before

We just got an in-bed cosleeper for those first few weeks for DD2 that is due in 5 weeks. I figure she can sleep in there until she isn't eating every 2 hours and I am also going to try to have her nap some in the crib or PNP. We definitely do NOT want to deal with the same bad sleep habits that DD1 had (only nap in the carseat or the swing) so we aren't having a big swing this time. I did get a rock n play but since she can't use that as long as the swing I figure the bad sleep habits won't be as ingrained by the time she grows out of it.

We went from rock and play to pack and play (with the bassinet level thing, but not the fancy snuggly bassinet).

I had intended to have her sleep in the bassinet from our UB Vista, since it was almost never used with the stroller. Of course, LO2 hated it as much as LO1 did so it's still practically new. If you wanted to make the drive out to the burbs you could have mine for free!

I think you definitely need something raised, but the bassinet level thing in the PnP is probably fine. Mine both slept better in RnP and I just needed the sleep then and dealt with transitions later.

We had a bassinet, which I LOVED, but it was only good until they reached 15 lbs, and I can't say whether I would've bought one on my own or not. It was a hand-me-down from my SIL and we used it for both boys. Once LO2 outgrew the bassinet, we moved him to a Pack 'n Play, which he didn't sleep as well in (we just had the basic mattress).

@catlady: if you have the space it seems like a no-brainer to me to use it! Just means it needs to be taken apart and reassembled a few times.

We used the bassinet insert for the PnP (not the weird snuggly nest thing but basically the upper level). Just the thin mat and a sheet. It was the perfect level for next to our bed and made me feel really safe in terms of SIDS risk reduction. Plus we've used the PnP a ton for other things since then so it was a worthy investment. Though we had the most basic version.

@Mrs. Goose: Good point about the swaddling! Also that's a good idea about having the crib in your room. I may bring that up as an idea to DH.

I would for sure get something that you don't have to reach far down into, whether that is an arms reach co sleeper or the bassinet insert for a pack and play. I don't place a lot of stock in spaces being too big for babies to sleep in, in fact I think it's good to get them used to all that space asap. Presumably the baby will be swaddled or in a sleep sack anyway so I feel they won't know the difference! We used our crib in our bedroom right away and I would do the same again. Moved it into her room at 6 months so she didn't have to get used to a different bed. For some reason she greatly disliked sleeping in the pack and play bassinet top part (didn't have the fancy little nest for the pack and play) so I gave up on naps in there early on. However, she naps daily in the pack and play and has sinned about 9.5 months which helps with travelling or overnights.

All that to say, if it was me I'd just use the pack and play beside my bed with the top section in if I were you.

@catlady: H constantly woke herself up when she kept hitting the sides of her Moses basket (we did not swaddle), so I want to use something with more space that I can keep by the bed.

@hilsy85: @avivoca: Hmm, I think ours does actually have the bassinet level. It just doesn't have the separate attachment thing that you can put on top. That seems more snugly for a newborn. But maybe that will cause as many problems as the RnP.

We bought a Halo bassinest on kijiji, and then resold it four months later when we were done with it. Ultimately it cost is $20. It was great to have him right there, at bed level, and he transitioned from that to a crib with no problems.

We got a new pack n play with the bassinet insert for $60, so if you think the idea of the pack n play is good and you just want the baby higher up, you could just do that--way cheaper than another co sleeper and a longer lifespan.
There's no way I would want to reach down into a pack n play for MOTN feedings for the first few weeks.

Since #2 is most likely our last, I didn't want to invest in a co-sleeper either (not even used), even though we'll most likely co-sleep with #2 also. We just have so much gear! We have a pnp, rock n play, and someone recently gave me a swing (I never got it for #1... Footprint is too big!) so I figured we'll just make do with something. DD1 co-slept with us from the early days on so I'm not opposed to just doing that again if it came to that.

LO2 is due in a couple months and we're finally starting to get his nursery and stuff ready.

LO1 slept in a Rock n Play beside our bed and napped in a swing. We had a miserable time transitioning her to her crib, so we are hoping to get LO2 used to sleeping on a flat surface earlier. Both our RnP and swing were ruined in a flood anyway, so all we have is the Pack and Play and I'm trying to figure out if we need to get anything else.

DH thinks LO2 can just sleep in the PnP (with a better mattress) in our room. I worry that it will be too big for a newborn and awkward for me to reach him in the MOTN. Our PnP doesn't have a newborn bassinet thingey. LO1 hated the PnP as a newborn, but we had other stuff for her to sleep in and didn't try too hard.

I am eyeing either a Halo bassinet or an Arm's Reach co-sleeper, but DH thinks it's unnecessary. Then again, he's not the one who will be BFing in the middle of the night.

What would you guys recommend? Worth it to get a bassinet or co-sleeper? Or wait and see how he does in the PnP?

I feel like I should know this stuff by now!
