@mrbee: Garlic is a big part of my life, and I appreciate fresh garlic, but pre-minced garlic is like MY BFF. Whenever I realize I'm out I get SO MAD. I now keep a huge one in the fridge and I pick up a backup tiny one in the produce section whenever I think of it. Worth the wasted fridge space, IMO.

There are way too many things, but Wagon Sr. is fully aware of all of them. Living with someone for almost 10 years will do that...!! He still slips up and forgets things almost every day, but it doesn't bother me nearly as much as it used to. It used to bother me that he'd forget and slip up after how many times I've asked him to do this one little thing that would take him 0.5 seconds to complete....?!! so I guess my thing would be to do all the little things that he knows I would prefer for him to do in order to make life easier!

This includes so many things that you guys have already noted... closing cabinet doors, running water in dishes before leaving them in the sink, putting his clothes in the designated messy clothes section of the bedroom (seriously, I gave up on him putting his clothes away, I just give him a HUGE slice of the bedroom and I still have to sleep under a pile of dirty clothes every night because he leaves them all over the bed), putting his shoes away (although he gets better at this every time the dog destroys a pair of his shoes).

@Crumbs: Maybe an incentive system, etc. For the longest time, I would make a point of thanking him for taking out the trash, etc. Part of it was been a loving, respectful spouse, part of it was getting him to see how important it was to me. With Chorewars.com now, every month I get him a giftcard or something like to reinforce his hard work.

He just needs to clean, period. On his own, without me asking. What especially drives me nuts is the dishes and the laundry. He needs to put away his clean laundry! It can sit around for weeks without him actually putting it away - he'd pick at it like a bum everyday instead of actually putting it away!

But what I'd appreciate more is him putting away the dishes. He takes it downstairs into the kitchen and leaves it on the counter! It drives me NUTS! He doesn't even stack them! He'll lay dishes next to each other. I've tried to get him to break the habit, and he'll be fine for a few days, but then he starts slipping again.

@dagret: Once the garlic hardens though, it is really hard to clean the garlic press! If it's soaked in water though, it's not so bad I think... I always appreciate a good garlic press soaking from the chef!!

Taking the trash and recycling out before it spills over the floor (recyclables mainly). Chorewars.com has been instrumental in getting him to keep the place cleaner and accept responsibility for it.

I know that he gets on my case about not replacing the toilet paper when it's empty. I've been working on that one a lot.

He's got to cut some of the gym time out of his routine. He goes every morning before work and for 2 hours on Saturdays and Sundays. I'm glad that he's takign care of himself physically, but this leaves a lot of the household managing and basically all the meal prep on me since I am the only one home during the time it needs to get done! It really bothers me when he gets home from an intense workout then whines about being too tired to help me with something I had been waiting on him for. This is why it's taking us so long to set up our nursery, because he spends most of his weekend at the gym or recovering from his workout and is too tired to go shopping with me or to set things up. he also stays late at work so by the time he gets home it's time to eat dinner then we're both too tired to do anythign else.

Otherwise, he's actually neater than I am and he does at least 50% of the household chores so I can't complain about that. I just keep gently reminding him that once the baby comes he either has to stop going ot the gym in the morning or come home earlier from work.

come home more! does that count as work around the household?! he only comes home 2-3 days a week and it is getting increasingly more killer now that DS is mobile and i'm prego with 2....impossible to get things done sometimes.

@dagret: lol - cleaning the garlic press is why i never use it!

It would be nice if he made me dinner. Having said that, he did make me dinner last night. Actually, he's pretty good - I'm amazed at the annoying habits he's dropped since we got married.

He's pretty good about doing things. We both do laundry, he cooks - I clean up, he vacuums, does all the outside work, takes out the trash, dusts.

I would really appreciate if he could just change the toilet paper roll. I don't understand it.

Only 2 things I can think of. The first is shutting drawers and cabinets. I don't know why he leaves them open after he takes something out. How hard is it to shut a dresser drawer or kitchen cabinet? And how can he forget to do it so often? It's not hard for me to close them behind him, but it's weird.

The second is cleaning the counters and stove. He's awesome at washing the dishes, but then he'll leave crumbs and spills all over the counters and splattered food on the stove top. It doesn't count as "cleaning the kitchen" if you leave that mess!

@mrbee: b/c if I make dinner I shouldn't have to wash the dishes too. I usually chuck it into a pan of water to soak and soften up, and if i'm in the middle of prepping dinner I don't have time to dig out toothpicks to get the garlic out of the holes. I don't want my fingers to be super-garlicky since I'm breastfeeding.

After all of that, I wake up the baby, nurse him, get him dressed, and take him upstairs to get myself dressed....and I have to make our bed! With the baby in my arms!! It drives me INSANE.

We just had this conversation yesterday. He gets upset when I use the garlic press and don't clean out the holes (even if its his turn to do dishes.) I told him he needs to let it go bc I don't say anything to him about his inability to replace the toilet paper roll or his knack for putting dirty clothes right next to the hamper!

Eta: he does a lot around the house when I ask him to. I wish he'd take imitative to do things more often. Sometimes he will literally say, "what can I do to help?" And I tell him and he just doesn't do it.

@T.H.O.U.: I second that! Don't get home and start playing on your iPad and then at 10 pm go "oh, is the dishwasher full? Do we need to wash your pump parts? I'm too tired, I'll do it in the morning!"

@mrbee: when he takes his suit off he puts it on our bed. When it's time to go to bed its still there, so he moves it to the laundry room instead of hanging it up in the closet. So then it is in my way when I need to iron or do laundry. Our closet is closer to the bed than the laundry room so he's actually creating more work for himself! Just hang up the darn suit!!!

I'm the obnoxious spouse, hands down. I do all these things lol. I throw clothes on the floor, don't wipe up coffee spills, I leave things out, I leave half drunk glasses of water everywhere, use the good hand towel for the counter, etc.

DH sets his oatmeal bowl in the sink and doesn't put water in it. That's my main little beef. He has a dozen for me though
