The 12-18 looked big but when I tried them on, she walked just fine and they stayed on. Vi just moved from the 12-18 to 18-24 (which is the equivalent to like a 5?). She wears exclusively soft soles to help promote better foot development and balance, and yes I do think they are thick enough to protect her feet.
