We had both and honestly rarely used the lounge set. We entertain a lot... We even have a fire pit but we just weren't using the lounge set as much. Then eventually I wanted to put DD's outdoor toys on the deck so we sound the lounge stuff I got a small bench and side table instead.

We debated this as well and decided to go with the dining set. We do have room for a lounge set but had to prioritize since we're hosting a party next month and couldn't get both right away. This is what we got:

We love our dining set. Now that we have kids, if we are outside, we are close by with them and we dont really have time to "lounge". Our chairs are comfortable (even though they are just from Walmart). They are light weight enough to drag around to where the kids are (or to the fire pit) and sturdy enough to sit in for a meal or kinda lean back/lounge in when relaxing.

I like the idea of lounge furniture with a coffee table and you can even get some of those folding TV tray tables and leave them right inside. When you guys feel like eating outside you can take them out.
OR, we got a couple of folding wooden sets for our beach rental. We have a 6 person dining table that folds and stores everything in a little cube. It's kind of amazing. And we got a little 2 person bistro set. But you'd have to have the room for them when they are unfolded/open. They are both that teak wood or whatever, so they look nice and you'd never think they were folding.

I also like the idea of a sectional for more seating if that's the route you go.

ETA: this is the 6 Person folding set we have.

On our deck, we have a dining set, rectangular table with 6 chairs. If I could go back again, I would have gotten different chairs, the ones we have are a pain to move around and don't fit nicely under the table.

We also have a pool with a nice section where we debated a lounge set (loveseat, 2 chairs, coffee table) but I couldn't find one without cushions (we sometimes get high wind and I was worried about fishing them out of the pool). I am still on the look out though, I just don't know exactly what I am looking for, but I will know when I see it.

Having said that, what about a sectional for the lounge area?

We have a outdoor lounge set (Love seat and 2 chairs). I purchased an inexpensive set from World Market. I love it!

As someone who used to do layouts for a living I highly suggest making scaled shapes for the furniture and seeing how you would arrange it before deciding what to buy.

I think it depends on what your family will use more on a day to day basis. We love eating outside when the weather is nice. My oldest will ask to eat breakfast, lunch, dinner and snacks out there! So for us it's definitely dining table.

We have both but the lounge furniture gets way more use. Fires, just hanging out, etc. We don't eat outside as much (DH doesn't like it, ds way too distracted!)

We love our lounge furniture outside. We have a sectional couch that can sit 4-5 adults and a coffee table with it. We use it all the time. We have sat out there and eaten as well, the coffee table helps manage all the food. DH and I enjoy sitting on the couch and chatting/reading while DD plays nearby in her sandbox or water table. I also love lying and having a nap outdoors on it in the summer when DD is down for her nap. We have a big shade umbrella that covers the whole seating area.

We have both but our deck is massive. If I could just do one I would do the lounge set. We use it more then the dining set.

We don't eat outside because there are too many bugs. We have two chaise lounges that lay completely flat, so the once in a blue moon when we have several people over we accomodate 6 comfortably.

I would get a lounge set with a coffee table to put a drink or plate down. Then, I would get some melamine plates that are sturdy for lap eating. Modular lounge furniture may let you double end tables as cube seating.

I voted for the lounge set but I would get a few side tables so you can have very relaxed casual meals out there!

Help me think this through, bees. We are having a patio poured this week and I'm anxious to get it furnished. In an ideal world I would love to have both a dining area and a lounge area but it just is not big enough for both. I'd been assuming all along we'd get a dining set (and mentioned it to my husband who mmhmm'd me), but when we actually went shopping for it this weekend he said he'd rather get a lounge set. He is ultimately fine with me getting whatever I want, but he does make some valid points and now I'm torn.

Pros of Dining Set:
- We would get a table with 6 chairs, which would be big enough for most of the hosting we do
- We have my parents over for dinner once or twice a week, and have my parents/siblings over once a month, and I think it would be nice if we could eat/hang out/play games outside
- We could pull the chairs over to the small fire pit we are buying, and have seating for 6
- Lounge furniture tends to be bigger so I think we could only have seating for 4 if we did that, and then maybe get some extra smaller type chairs to pull out when we had company...? So I think the dining set would be more comfy for company

Pros of lounge set:
- When we aren't hosting I don't really care if we're eating outside, and we will probably be outside just hanging out most nice days of the week.
- Lounge furniture would be more comfy to well... lounge in.. when we are just hanging out
- When it is just us/my parents seating for 4 would be enough
- We have a large dining room table inside so when we are hosting we could always eat inside then move outside and just get extra chairs (although again, I feel like this is not as comfy for a group bigger than 4).

So yea... I dunno. Looking at what is most comfortable for us on an every-day basis vs. what I know I'd prefer when we're entertaining.

If you don't have room for both on your patio what do you have and love?
