Our installer said passenger side is second safest, if for no other reason, than because when you are getting your baby out of the car, you want it to be on the sidewalk side, not the road side. The person who inspected the car seat agreed that the latch system does not work in the middle seat, but it can be just as secure if you pull it as tight as possible when tightening the seat belt. You shouldn't be able to move the car seat at all if you push it from side to side. We have another one on the way and plan on putting the infant car seat on the side and having my toddler remain in the middle. DH is too tall to sit in front and have the car seat behind him so we sort of have to do it that way.
