I agree asking about parties (we like that our new preschool only does major holidays, our other center would have thrown a St. Pats day party that was really just another excuse to feed sugar!)

I would ask what their goal is for when the kids go on to Kindergarten. Do they want them to be able to read? Or just letter sounds?

@honeybear: is right. One reason I chose our preschool was because of the way the director interacted with the children and the parents. I especially loved the no nonsense way she dealt with parents.

@honeybear: That's great advice, I will try to pay close attention to interactions! And you're right, I'm sure any questions I can think of after our visit can surely be answered by phone, not sure why I'm stressing about that. Thanks so much!

I asked for a handbook and spent nearly all of my visit watching the interaction between the teachers and the students. The director should be willing to answer any procedural questions you have by phone if you think of them after the visit, so I would use the time to observe the intangible stuff--what the teachers are doing and how the children are responding. Also, the school's cleanliness was a big deal to me.

Based off of HB posts I would ask about expected paret involvement and party $ policies. Seems there are types of preschools that expect a lot of parent involvement which isn't possible with WOHPs. And there seems to be those who throw a lot of parties but all food & supplies come from parents.

Good luck!

Besides learning about the schools' educational philosophy (most we went to were play-based), I asked about discipline methods, menu, nap time, how many adults in the room, outdoor time, an example of an average day/week, security, late pick up policy, trips, holidays and days off, and sick policy.

Not sure if this is already on your list, but if your LO isn't completely potty trained yet, I'd ask what they support: will they support whatever methods you want to do, or will they only do certain things? Is there a child size bathroom in the preschool room, and is it easily accessible by your child when they want/need it?

Education of lead teacher and main staff in that room.

What are their main goals for your LO while in preschool? What do they specifically work on, if anything "academic"?

What outside activities/guests do they have come in on a regular basis? i.e., local musicians, dance class during the day, artists, etc.

Safety of school (i.e., entry to school, fenced playgrounds, etc.)

We have a pretty general list of questions for our tour tomorrow and I've done some googling but I know that there are questions I haven't thought of. We need to make a pretty quick decision since we are so late in the game, I want to make sure I cover all of the important things!
