@Adira: that's so annoying! Sometimes if I know I won't be seeing our primary teacher, I'll write a note. Maybe you can write a note and ask the questions and have her write back/relay the information?

So the main people that look after the infants weren't there when I got there. I tried to ask the other lady, but she watches the older kids, so she didn't know. But according to his sheet, they didn't feed him anymore often than normal, so I don't know what's going on! Ugh.

@Adira: I'd ask for the time and amount of each bottle. How long the feeding takes, how often they stop to burp/switch sides, if he is being held upright to eat, if they soothe in other ways first before feeding, and when and how much he spits up.
Good luck figuring it out!

@mewtill: Thank you for your suggestions!!! I suspect that they will have no idea how long it's been going on (if it's been longer than just yesterday) because the main caregiver is on vacation this week, so I think these are new people who don't usually watch Xander and don't know what his norm is.

I usually send four 5oz bottles, assuming that they will only use three of them. Should I maybe just send the 4th bottle with a couple extra ounces instead of all 5 oz? That would definitely be more doable for me! If he drinks 20oz at daycare, I have to add two extra pumping sessions in the evening to try to make up the difference, which sucks.

6 oz bottles sound like a lot to me too. I would ask:

1) How long has this been going on? A day, a few days?
2) What hungry cues is he showing?
3) How long does he take to finish a bottle/how does he eat his bottle? [to address spitting up-maybe he's eating too fast, etc]

Whenever daycare asks me to change something, I wait a day or two before I do. And I ask a million questions. :) In this case, I would at most send a small bag of frozen milk/extra 2 oz bottle for them to use to tide him over. If it's a growth spurt, he can get the extra milk from you when you're together.

@Sammyfab: Yeah, I agree. I'll have to see what happened today. I'm just worried that if they give him all four bottles, that will be 20 oz in a 10 hour period, and there's no way I can pump enough to provide for that if that ends up being the norm!

@1000tulip: I have thought of that, but this daycare told me that they try to stick to a 3 hour schedule, which is why I was doing the three 5 oz bottles. Plus he's on the same schedule at home, just nursing instead of bottles, so it doesn't seem like he really needs to eat more often! Though maybe he needs more milk in each bottle? But 6 oz bottles seems like a lot to me, so I'm not really sure... I'm confused!

Have you thought about smaller bottles more frequently? Maybe he is eating too much at one time and that is why he is spitting up? At about 4 months my EBF LO was on 5 bottles that were 3-3.5 oz then I was honestly sick of that many bottles so I switched by 5 months to 4 bottles that were 4 oz and still on the 4 bottle about 4 oz at 9 month.
What I do might be a regression for you though? and I would love to get to 3 bottles that are 5 oz! Less bottles=less hassle

I definitely wouldn't rule out that he may just be hungry/thirsty...especially in this heat! I would only be concerned about the spitting up. Hopefully others have more questions you can ask!

@Sammyfab: Yeah, Xander used to spit up all the time, but hasn't really in a long time, so I thought it was suspicious that she said he was spitting up a lot. His normal caretaker is also on vacation this week and she never said anything to me about his feeding, so I'm confused as to what's going on now. I'm wondering if maybe he was hungry more often because we have a heat wave going on here and maybe he was dehydrated, but not sure!

Thank you for the question suggestions! I feel like I need a list of questions because I was so unprepared when I showed up yesterday and they were like "Yay! You're here! Xander's hungry - can we feed him more??" and I was all "WTF... okay..."

Hmm...the questions that come to mind are:

-how are you feeding him? (position, paced, etc.)
-are you burping him throughout the feeding?
-what signs is he giving that make you think he's hungry?

If giving him the pacifier is something you do at home then I'd make that suggestion to daycare. The spitting up is the red flag for me...which tells me he is either eating too fast or too much, and maybe not getting burped throughout. (I'm also assuming Xander is not a big spitter-upper at home. My LO spit up tons regardless until 4.5 months and it just stopped one day)

I nurse Xander on the weekends and he eats six times a day, consistently, 3 hours apart, and sleeps through the night. When I'm at work, I send him to daycare with three 5 oz bottles. I've noticed that they ALWAYS write that he drank all 5 oz for every feeding and that they feed him every 3 hours.

Yesterday, one of the daycare providers told me that Xander is consistently getting hungry ~30 minutes early, and basically asked if they were allowed to feed him earlier. They also mentioned he was spitting up a lot (which is maybe why he was so hungry?).

So... what kinds of questions should I ask them about this? I feel like 5 oz every 3 hours should be enough - I'm not sure why he would be getting hungry early all the time (though maybe it's a growth spurt? He's 4.5 months). Should I ask if he really eats all 5 oz every feeding? Should I ask how long a feeding lasts? Should I ask if they try giving him his pacifier first in case he's not really hungry? I'm not really sure what I should ask, but I feel like something fishy is going on... what do you ladies (and gents!) think?
