We used to go to a local Chinese place maybe once a month, and a local Greek place about once a month with friends. We also used to go to a local pizza shop with all sorts of cool pizzas; my mom always got a white pizza with clams. A couple times a year we were allowed to get Little Caesars pizza or KFC; which seemed like such a treat (for such crap!)</p> <p>ETA: We also used to go to this little local Mexican joint where this old grandma would make you a fresh corn tortilla with butter for $.25. The staff was so patient with my brother who always made a mess emptying out sugar packets into his Orange Juice.</p> <p>My mom and I had a tradition of following mall excursions with a bite at Cheesecake Factory.</p> <p>All as a family...Hamburger Hamlet and American Cafe come to mind. I used to love going to Luby's (a cafeteria like Picadilly) because I got so excited to pick out my color of Jello. </p> <p>My parents rarely took us to chain restaurants--they always took us to local places, which I really appreciate now. As a teenager we usually went to a local Mexican restaurant...Carreta's, I think. Then we went to Hometown Buffet, Luby's, and Furr's all the time because kids ate free and my lil brother and I ate a ton so it was worth it for them. For special ocassions, we went to TGIFriday's and Red Lobster. For dim sum, we went to Grand House because a family friend owned it. Then my dad went through a Benihana phase and we went there regularly, and he loves sushi so we'd go to sushi once in a while.
