@Foodnerd81: The rug is pretty thick and soft. The white part of the pattern is slightly higher than the colored portion, which makes for bumpy tracks for DS1's trains but pretty comfy overall. The rug will "shed" in the beginning so vacuuming often at first is necessary. When looking at rugs on the site, make sure you check out the up close photos for thickness. Hand hooked wool is thick, but flat weave is not.

@yin: I've been eying that exact rug- how thick is it? Is it soft for a baby to sit on?

We don't have a rug in the nursery yet. It's so small but I want one anyway.

We have the "candy dot" rug from Land of Nod. It's fun, gender neutral (we wanted to be able to use it for a play room or shared nursery down the road), and ties together all of the colors in her room. The dots are raised with a thicker pile, which DD loves touching and feeling.

@nana87: hahaha! Jinx! I am a real fan of FLOR. And I looked at your profile. If you're in NYC, you can easily pop into one of their 3 locations there. I was glad when the Georgetown location opened here in DC because I was about to take a trip to NYC just to look at the product!

we haven't gotten it yet, but we're thinking of getting one from Flor (flor.com)--they're carpeted tiles, so if one square gets dirty it's easier to clean or replace. which appeals to us not only for messy baby purposes, but also we have 2 dogs, including one who loves eating our other carpets (uuuugh!). They're having a 25% off sale this month so even though our due date is a loooong way off we might get it soon!

We're going to be using modular carpet tiles from FLOR so that if there are any spills or accidents on the rug we only have to replace a small square. We have it in several other rooms in our house and love it!

Helps if you have a showroom nearby, or order samples, to be sure you like the overall pile, feel & color of the square.

We bought one recently from rugsusa.com, and I love it! They always have sales going on, and the quality is great.

http://www.rugsusa.com/rugsusa/rugs/rugs-usa-moroccan-trellis/lt-grey/200MTVS27T-26010.html

The rug ended up in DS1's room instead, so I'm still searching for a rug for DS2's nursery. I might lean towards a yellow one.

@Maysprout: I don't think ours has loops... it's very flat and kind of rough. But loops might be a pain for crawling and for cleaning! We don't spend much time in the nursery (only for sleeping) so we didn't take softness into account. But if you're going to be playing in there, I think as long as it's plush enough to protect from faceplants, you're good. Or some people have used the foam tiles... but that's definitely not as pretty as a rug!

I was considering using the fake sheepskin throw rugs from Ikea in the nursery because they are soooo softttt.

It's soft and comfy for laying on, and neutral for when LO's room changes into a big girl room. It's held up well, we're very happy with it!

@mrs. wagon: I've seen some nice soft ones from target. The solid colored ones at our target now have loops in the yarn, so I was worried babies fingers would get caught once she learned to crawl but I think I might be over thinking things. Is that how yours is from target?

We originally didn't get one, but the glider was sliding around on the hardwood floor so we got a basic solid one from target. It's chocolate brown. I'm glad because we changed the nursery a bit after LMW was born, and it still goes with the bedding!
