The white part of the pattern is slightly higher than the colored portion, which makes for bumpy tracks for DS1's trains but pretty comfy overall. The rug will "shed" in the beginning so vacuuming often at first is necessary. When looking at rugs on the site, make sure you check out the up close photos for thickness. It's fun, gender neutral (we wanted to be able to use it for a play room or shared nursery down the road), and ties together all of the colors in her room. But loops might be a pain for crawling and for cleaning! We don't spend much time in the nursery (only for sleeping) so we didn't take softness into account. But if you're going to be playing in there, I think as long as it's plush enough to protect from faceplants, you're good.
