I follow moms on call (after the trauma of baby #1 who literally never slept more than 45 minutes for months). I recommend it. It outlines schedules starting at birth (though the first schedule mostly says “give yourself and baby grace”.) But LO is 10 weeks today, EBF, and on a fairly regular and predictable schedule. She actually just STTN last night (with no tears) 7-7 (even with MOC, my first would never have done that, because they’re different babies, but the methods helped a ton). And my second was a MOC baby and didn’t sleep through until 6 months—my sweet girl is taking pity on me ;) If First Time Mom Me had seen this, I’d have been judgey, but it has really worked well for my family. Feel free to PM me with questions.

But yes, bedtime for baby should be late-ish for at least 6 weeks.

ETA: MOC advocates own room from the beginning, but I’m not comfortable with that. I sleep on a futon in her room (I think crib in your room would be similar, it just doesn’t work for us because my husband works from home and his office is right off the bedroom.)

I agree with the above and that attempting a schedule with a newborn will probably end with more frustration than anything :meh:. When I tried to force a schedule before baby was 3ish months, it just failed miserably and would only make me more upset. Sometimes he needed to eat every 1-2 hours, sometimes he could go 5-6 overnight. Once I let the idea of a schedule go and just went with the flow, my mindset was a lot better. I craved a certain flow to our day but just had to resign to the fact that I needed to wait it out.

I’m 28weeks with #2 and I love my 1 year old’s schedule. But I know my scheduled down time and sleep will be derailed for a few months once new baby comes. Just have to prepare myself mentally for that. I have heard good things about a book: “Moms on Call.” I believe it sets up a loose schedule beginning at like 2 weeks. Worth a try if you feel like it’s better for everyone to have a plan! I’m skeptica it would work so young, but I’ve heard others who’ve had success with it and really like it.

I went with wake times during the day with E and for the first few months wasn't awake much longer then 45min. I would put her down at 9-10 with us, it wasn't until 3 months that she had a solid 7pm bedtime. She cluster fed btwn 7and 9 for the first couple of months so it was easier to have her out with me and then give her a top up bottle when I went in for bed and put her down.

I’m in the thick of this right now, DS3 is 2 weeks old. I’d love to feed him every 3 hours but right now during the day it’s closer to 2-2.5, and 3-4 hours at night. I agree with the others that they aren’t on a real schedule for a couple of months. I’’m not sure how many naps a day he takes, he’s still a sleepy newborn so it feels like a lot. Also I think it’s easier to get the big kids to bed first then the newborn usually goes to bed around when we do, I like to try to feed him right before I go to bed. We’ll probably transition him to his room around 6-8 weeks. It’s hard for the first couple of months!

Yeah not until 3 months or so do they develop a pattern. I do remember bedtime for newborns is late, like 10pm 😜.
Baby only slept in our room in the bassinet for 8 weeks or so bc he was up constantly and no one was sleeping!
We did toddler bedtime first then hung w baby til their bedtime. Around 12 weeks things got easier and more settled. Good luck!

It’s foggy for me now, but I just went with the flow for baby 2 and that’s my plan with baby 3. I’m not a go with the flow person at all though and scheduled sleep is very necessary for me, but not until they are at a sleep trainable age. Which to me is the 16 week point, I know everyone feels differently about that though.

Definitely put your older kid who has a routine and schedule to bed first and deal with the baby after. I remember trying to keep my second awake until 10;30 so I could have the longer stretch match my sleep patterns, this is what we did with our first, but the baby had other plans and would crash hard for the first and longest stretch of sleep at 8 right away. So, in my opinion, you kind of have to follow their lead on sleep and feeds for a few months and then start shifting things. That’s my plan anyway!

We keep baby in our room for 6 months. My older two will go to bed first and then I’ll see what the baby wants to do.

From memory, none of my three children had even a remote schedule until they were much closer to 3-4 months and my third babe didn’t go to bed before 2130 until she was almost six months old. Once my third hit four months she consolidated her naps into three good sleeps during the day. Having said all that, my third babe was a colicky wee thing and much of her behaviour was / is down to her temperament and my older two were “easier” babies.

Personally, I would plan for a later bedtime and gradually work on inching it forward as she gets older and you’ve established your milk supply etc.

Hi!

I am due in a few weeks and just can’t remember the beginning stages. I have a toddler and would like to start a schedule asap with feeding and napping.

We start our day with LO1 around 630am- he’s sleep trained and on a strict schedule. Two days a week he will be in school.

Bedtime for LO2 is 630pm- no later than 7pm.

I would like to feed newborn every 3hours. I will be BF but may supplement w/ formula if I have supply issues.

Newborn will be in our room the first 2 months.
I plan to have her do all naps in her crib though.

Questions-How many naps should LO2 take?

How often should the naps be with a family wake time of about 630amish?

From day 1 should I try to put LO2 down at 600pm for bed with expecting a few night feeds etc since it’s very early? Or should I just know the bedtime will be later since it’s a newborn?

Toddler bedtime first or newborn bedtime first?

If baby slept in your room- how long were they there for?

LO2 will be in a pack n play....

thanks!
