I got pregnant in December so there was a lot of drinking going on because of the holidays. When December and mid-January came and went and I didn't get my period I took a HPT and got my BFP. The first question I asked my doctor when I went to see him was if all my drinking harmed the baby and he said it's fine and that many times there wouldn't be babies if alcohol wasn't involved.

I think I'm in the minority. I did completely stop drinking. We were having trouble conceiving so I stopped. I'm my head I was thinking I wanted to do all that I could so giving up my glass of wind a night wasn't too big a deal for me. I think it's just a matter of what you want to do and what you're comfortable with. I don't think you have to give things up until you know you are pregnant

@Modern Daisy: AF is Aunt Flo, AKA your period.

Like PP's said, the embryo doesn't share your blood supply for a few weeks, so what you eat or drink won't matter...unless you're a binge drinker, then I'd advise against it. I'm in the "drink till it's pink" camp: I had two glasses of wine the night before I got my BFP (granted, I was positive I wasn't pregnant that time).

@yoursilverlining: This is so reassuring! I did the same, drank a few drinks on the weekends until I got that BFP.

I had 6 or 7 drinks between conception and the positive pregnancy test. I had a couple more later in the pregnancy. I have no guilt around it. Like others said, in the first few weeks, it's no big deal. And later on, a drink a month or so is (IMO, not a medical professional) just fine. As long as you don't go crazy, I wouldn't worry about it.

I echo what everyone said above about continuing to drink as usual until you get your BFP. We actually went away for a long weekend in wine country and I drank a lot of wine the weekend before I got my BFP (thought we were out that month for sure), but I don't feel bad at all, especially since I took a test while we were gone and got a BFN.

I wouldn't worry about it at all...If you're usually just having one or two drinks, I would "drink til it's pink". If you were going out on like binge drinking benders, my answer might be different, lol. I personally drank small amounts of wine like 2 days before I found out I was pregnant.

omg I had no idea about the no shared blood supply until six weeks!!! I kind of freaked out because I had a drink 3 days after conception but now I know it was nothing to worry about. If I had known, I might have had one last celebratory drink before 6 weeks. Haha. Oh well.

My doctor said that I should continue doing everything I normally do until I get the positive test, which included taking prescription meds. I feel like drinking would fit in that same category.

I agree with @mediagirl: that your safest option is to not drink during the TWW. I personally think the early stages of the pregnancy are the most crucial in terms of fetal development so its worth the sacrifice to not drink during that time.

@PennyLainne: What is AF? Also, I've unfortuantely never had a regular cycle. I've been on birth control basically since I started getting my period at 16 years old, so almost 15 years. I stopped twice for different reasons and both times it took almost 5 months for me to get my period.

@Modern Daisy: Your TWW starts "approximately" half way through your cycle. 2 weeks before AF should show. If you have a fairly regular cycle then it shouldn't be too hard to figure out.

I agree!! I wouldn't give up drinking all together. Maybe not go on a huge bender every night but having a drink or two (or three) is totally fine. I actually went out for new years and got a little inebriated.... Well the BFP came on the 3rd. I could have sworn AF was going to show!

I did cut alcohol out for the first 3 months or so and then I figured screw that and relaxed a little.

Wow, I definitely came to the right place with this question! This is awesome. I feel a lot better hearing all of your responses and I had no idea that the baby wasn't connected to my blood supply at first. I was so worried and stressed about the fact that I would have to completely change my life just because I'm not using protection. And the thought of people noticing that I'm not drinking and thinking I"m pregnant, when I'm not, would really bother me.

@mediagirl: The thing is, I won't know what my TWW is since I'm not charting. I'm thinking about starting to chart soon though and that is probably what I will do just to be safe.

I still went to happy hours during our active TTC journey. I actuallly had two drinks (more than my usual 1/2!) during a happy hour a week or so before my BFP.

I think you're fine in this NTNT phase and even when you start TTC...

If you're worried about it, I would stop drinking during your TWW. Other than that, you should be fine to drink as much as you want. Honestly, i know lots of ladies that drank up until their BFP or even got drunk the weekend before their BFP (*cough* *cough*) and the baby was perfectly healthy. I asked both my nurse and OB about the fact that I was loaded at about 3 weeks of gestation and they just brushed it off. Said not to drink any more now. :)

My OB said exactly what all previous posters have said – within the first 4 weeks or so, there is no direct blood connection, so whatever food/drink you consume doesn’t affect the implanting embryo one way or the other and that drinking is perfectly safe before you get a BFP. My OB advised me to continue to eat and drink as I normally would (including both wine and hard liquor cocktails) until I got a positive pregnancy test, and then to stop drinking alcohol. Her rational is there is enough to worry about once you are actually pregnant and your behaviors affect the baby, don’t stress yourself out about doing things that don’t physically affect it – and that alcohol leaves your system in less than 24 hours (really, much less than 24 hours) so what you drank last week, or 3 days before you get a BFP is also nothing to worry about.

I did not stop drinking until the pregnancy test was positive. I drink in moderation, so it wasn't like I was getting wasted or anything. I talked to my doctor well before TTC and her advice was I needed to do whatever I felt most comfortable with, but there was no reason to stop drinking (in moderation) until I was actually pregnant.

I didn't stop drinking at all. I asked my doctor about this and she said not to stop drinking. When I got pregnant, I knew within a few days anyway and at that point I stopped drinking. As long as you are not a binge drinker, I don't really see a point in stopping beforehand.

I'm actively trying and still drinking. I've read in multiple places that you don't actually share a blood supply with the fetus until about six weeks, so drinking during that time shouldn't really harm anything. I maybe wouldn't indulge heavily in the drinking, but a drink now and then should be okay.

Note: This is truly just my opinion and I haven't spoken to a medical professional about it, but based on what I've read, I feel okay drinking while TTC. You should research it on your own and maybe talk to someone if you're concerned and don't take my advice as gospel. :)

So I've been off the pill now for about 2 weeks and not actively TTC, but would be happy if it happened. I will start actively TTC later on this summer if it doesn't happen before then.

In the meanwhile though, I'm not charting or anything and it just occurred to me that drinking might be an issue. I have a cocktail most days when I get home from work and usually 2 drinks on a weekend night. What if I were to get pregnant and not know it for a few weeks - would the drinking harm the baby?

I'm worried about this, but at the same time don't want to completely change my life around just because there's a small chance I could get pregnant. Do I have to stop completely? How do you all handle this? (for those of you who drink)
