Doesn't BRU have a trade in event so that you can trade in something like this for a % off something new? I don't know what they do with the old stuff though.

You might be able to recycle parts of it...I had thought if you take off the cover, you can see if it has the markings.

You absolutely shout not donate it to anyone who may sell it or use it with an actual child in the seat! Even if it looks fine, there could be internal damage to it that would cause it to malfunction in the case of a car accident.

I think they can't be used safely anymore so the ideas of keeping the cover or donating it to a fire station are good ideas!

I know you can donate it to fire station, car seat techs etc for car seat demonstrations, etc. Let me know if you're interested and I can put in contact with a group leader of a local car seat group.

@LovelyPlum: you have to cut the straps out and dispose of it. your local recycling plant might take it, but it's absolutely not ok to reuse, so definitely don't donate :)

eta: I'm in the same situation right now. I cut all the straps, including LATCH, out of all of the seats that were in the car. Then I tossed one cover, but saved the other cover as a backup just in case - and the body shop actually is disposing of them for me, I think. if they're still in the car when I get it back (I had to put them back in for the insurance adjuster to get photographs of the models) then I'll individually black bag them for the trash guys.

We were in an accident a few weeks ago, and our car was totalled. Though baby was not with us (THANK GOODNESS), her seat was. Insurance reimbursed us so we can get a new seat. What do I do with this one, though? It feels dishonest to donate it, because you just don't know. But I hate just throwing it away! Any thoughts? It is a Chicco Keyfit.

And don't worry, we are all ok. It turns out that it is a logistical nightmare to total your car, but the important thing is that we were not seriously injured!
