If you're worried that cash is impersonal (personally I was grateful for our cash gifts, didn't have to find storgae space in our tiny apartment), here are some other token gift ideas for a couple thats been living together:
Gift cards to restaurants
Tickets to an upcoming event
Christmas ornament with their wedding date
A photographer at the courthouse
Photo albums
Bring wedding cupcakes to their home reception
Membership to museum or a club

Cash is always a great option. Another gift my SIL got for her wedding which I thought was pretty unique was 3 bottles of wine - one to open on their 1 year, 5 year and 25 year anniversaries.

I would do something personalized and cash probably. In the past we have had paintings done for couples; either of a photograph or something special to them. If they own their house I also did a large print with their married name, lat & long coordinates and date, something like that.

An experience is great too. For one of my best friends we got them a gift card/mini membership to The Met in NYC so they could use it to see any opera/ballet/musical/show they wanted or use it at a restaurant. They just weren't the type to give cash to.

If they are travelers you could do a map that is personalized that they can put all the places they've been with pins, and places they'd like to go...,,

Lastly, a night or two away at a B&B or hotel is sometimes fun if you know a place they would enjoy.

1st I'd Google their names and see if they did in fact set up a registry. You can add a couple of known stores C+B, Macy's etc just to be sure. If they are registered I'd give them a GC to that store.

Otherwise, cash + personalized return address stamp would be cool.

ETA: about wine, unless you know the type of wine they like to drink I would steer clear. I like Reisling (it's sweet) I can find it and have bought it high ($67) and low ($9). If you gave me a Pinot Noir, no matter how "nice" the bottle I would regift or wait until I had guests over and hope they would drink it.

If they're wine drinkers, a nice bottle of wine ($50+) to drink on their first wedding anniversary, signed by you and your partner. A couple did this for us and we LOVED it. One of our most memorable gifts.

I would do cash but something small to go with it. Like toasting flutes or a frame or bottle of wine something like that.

Backstory:
This friend was one of DH's best friends and roommates in undergrad, and I lived with her too for a year after college. We are still close friends, but we don't see her as much now that DH and I live 5 hours away. We have only met the guy she is marrying once, but we like him a lot.

They are getting married at the courthouse and having a party at their house afterwards that we will be attending. I want to get them a gift, but I don't know what. They are both in their 30's so they don't need much and they don't really expect to receive anything. I don't think they are registered anywhere.

I know cash is always a good gift in these situations, but I was just wondering if you guys had any other ideas.
