We chose a full/double for my son which still leaves room for an adult to lay with him or read books. We have condo-sized bedrooms and a queen plus all his other furniture just wouldn't leave much floor space for playroom. Also, most fun kids bedding only comes in twin or full size.

@crazydoglady: Me too! I remember what a big deal it was at 22 to get my first "larger than twin" bed!

My son has been in a queen bed since age 4. It's actually fairly high and he had to use a little wooden step stool to climb up for the first year or so. His room is really large and we like being able to climb in to read stories. We sometimes sleep with him when he's sick, etc. I'd keep your existing mattress and just buy the new frame.

Agree with others that twin beds are totally fine! I'm another person who slept on them through my second year in college. :silly: Some people don't have space for bigger beds. Some people cannot afford them. So there are lots of points to consider about twin beds. I have awesome twin beds picked out for my girls.

But if I was bed sharing, and wanting a bed for a guest room, I'd go with a queen and put up rails. Maybe add a little step stool or something if she can't get back up into the bed yet.

If you already have a queen mattress, the room fits everything with a queen bed, just keep it! I slept on a twin until I got married haha but I don't really think it matters!

My 3 year old went straight from a crib to a queen. It's actually fairly tall but she doesn't move a lot in her sleep so it's never been an issue.

I like having a queen because it's easy for us to all sit in her bed to read bedtime stories and one of us usually naps with her during the weekend.

My current 3 year old middle child sleeps on a queen mattress on the floor of his room. No problems so far! And I love that we can snuggle some nights without me falling off. My oldest got a full size mattress at 3years old too.

The only con I have is that since he still has potty accidents occasionally, it’s a pain to change the sheets. But that might be bc it’s on the floor

Our DD went straight into a queen bed at 3 yo. No issues. We had extra queen beds bc we had guest rooms and DH and I both had good quality queens when we married and then we bought a king. So we had it and it's been great.

DS will also go straight into a queen once he is old enough and out of the crib.

@crazydoglady: lol, that's what I was thinking too! Can't a twin be a till college bed? Then all the bedding is soooooo much cheaper too!

But if you have the queen already, I agree that I'd just use that.

If a queen fits, go with it! We have twin beds for our LOs, but we move every couple of years and we never know what size bedrooms they will have, or if they will ever have to share a room in the future. Right now they both have small bedrooms and a twin is definitely the smart choice. I didn’t buy the cheapest beds out there since I hope these beds will last them until they move out.

@wrkbrk: I think a twin makes sense when it’s a small room and you want the kid to have lots of floor space to play on. Then when they aren’t playing with toys on the floor so much but are larger, upgrading (or not- I also had a twin bed until well after college). But I definitely wouldn’t want to spend a lot on a twin bed.

Our newly 3 year old has had a full-size bed since he came out of the toddler bed. If we didn't already have the full, he would likely get an XL full or XL queen just so he would have a bed that will fit him when he's in high school. I don't see the point in buying small beds when the life expectancy is longer than the projected use.

My sister's and I all got queen size beds after the bunk beds weren't in use anymore.

@MLE81: I don’t understand the point of twin size beds. Why not just get a queen from the beginning and not upgrade when the kid is 13 or whatever? DS is 3 and still in his crib (converted to toddler bed) but we will most definitely be getting him a queen for his “forever” bed - likely next year.

@MLE81: is the bed on a box spring already or just a mattress on a frame? I would probably take the weird frame away and just leave the box spring and mattress on the ground for now. I don’t see any reason that having a queen would be problematic, but it’s possible you might want that queen bed somewhere else or want a smaller bed and more floor space in the future. My older daughter went from her crib to a queen size bed in our old condo, then we moved into a house where we had a guest room in addition to kids rooms, and inherited a full size bed. So we gave her the full bed and moved the queen into the guest room. So basically I’m saying, don’t spend money you don’t have to right now but a queen is probably fine.

Background: I have been bed-sharing with my DD basically since she was born 3 years ago. We currently sleep in the “guest room” on a queen size bed. One side is against the wall and there is a rail on the other side, so I have started leaving her alone there overnight, although most nights she calls for me around 4-5 am. She also naps there alone during the day.

In preparation for baby #2’s arrival in November, we have decided that we want to turn the guest room into our DD’s official “room”, and get a more suitable bed for her (the current bed frame is metal and has several parts that stick out and are rather sharp, so it’s not ideal for a child’s room. It’s also very high off the ground, although DD can climb in and out herself).

Our inclination right now is to get the MALM queen size frame from IKEA so we can keep the same mattress (it’s relatively new, and our DD is used to sleeping on it). My question is whether a queen size bed is ultimately too big/unnecessary for a toddler/preschooler/child, and whether we should be looking at a twin/single instead. The room is large enough to fit the queen size bed along with other furniture (dresser, bookshelf, perhaps a reading chair), but wondering if anyone foresees any potential issues (either now or in the future) with having a queen size bed in a 3 year old’s room?

Thanks in advance for any insight!
