I think 2T would be a good option! A started wearing 2T around 20lbs, 19 months. She's almost 2 and still fits in them well.

Oh, how wonderful! This is such an exciting time!

As far as sizes and stuff, I'd do at least 2T/3T. I have a boy and I pretty much have exhausted all the standard options for clothing. Here's my 2 cents:

Since it's winter time, you can do some great stuff, the best pants in the world (in my opinion) for boys are from Gymboree, they are the fleece and jersey lined cargo pants. Super soft, elastic waist and WARM without having 1000 layers.

For tops, I do a lot of long sleeved tees and polo collar style shirts. I get them a little longer so that my son's back isn't exposed when he's zooming around on the floor. And for warmth, I really like the fleece half zips, you can get them anywhere, really!

@hotchildinthecity: tees from indie stores tend to run small. i always size up because they shrink and if they're too big now, they can always wear them next year.

My DD is 2 and her size varies depending on brand. She's also gotten a lot leaner lately, so a lot of her clothes that were fitting tight (that I was about to put away) now all fit perfectly. But I still prefer shirts to be a little bigger. It's easier to layer a sleeveless onesie and I just fold up the sleeves. Same goes for sweaters, sweatshirts and for most jackets. I'd get a mixture of 2T-3T.

@lamariniere: agree. We'll just get a few basics. A lot of my girlfriends are wanting to buy him silly/sarcastic tees and one from our alma mater and such. I'll just tell them 2T i think :)

I would say 2-3T that would give you an assortment. My DS is just about 20 months and is 33 inches, 29 lbs 2T tops fit him well, 18-24 month bottoms are still a lil loose on him. I would imagine he will be in 2T for the next 6-12 months as the growing has definitely slowed down the last several months.

@Mrs. Jump Rope: we're registering at target, etsy and amazon but i was planning on adding the clothes from target. I kinda wanted a few things to take with us to korea and until we can go shopping at home.

@Weagle: thats a good point. Maybe i will just generally tell people 2t but not encourage the clothes-buying

.@locavore_mama: nope. We will get no feedback. We will get a size update but it will be a little old by the time we get it, and likely after the shower.

@T.H.O.U.: true about bottoms. My son is a bruiser with a belly, so he can only wear elastic-waisted bottoms. But I know of other boys who need a belt with regular button/zip bottoms since they are so skinny!

For boys I've heard the hardest part is the shorts/pants. If they are tiny in the waist and/or short/long in the leg, pants can be all over in sizing.

Shirts and tops it doesn't matter as much. Maybe just register more for the tops, jackets, stuff like that and worry about sizing him in pants when he gets to you.

So he will be just over 2 when he arrives? Hmmm, I would probably go with 2T-3T tops and 18-24month or 2T bottoms. At 2 years my son was about 35in and 27lbs, which was on the higher end of the height and weight charts. But I would wait to buy expensive things like coats and shoes for when he arrives.

I'm assuming you won't hear back on how the 18-24m fit him? I would probably register for an assortment of 2T - 3T? Some Brands fit smaller than others.
But 2T should be OK, I think because he sounds lean and average in height.

I wouldn't register for them at all. Register for what you really need equipment-wise because there's always going to be a few people that disregard it and buy clothes anyway. People just like to buy kids clothes :)

Yay!!

This might be a pita to do, but I've found that every brand had different sizing. My kid swims in 2Ts from one brand, but 3T from old mavy is snug on her. She's 36" and 26lbs.

Where are you registering? Rather than go off a specific size, can you look at the tags? Then, I'd go up one size. So if he is currently 20lbs and 30" and that fits into a 24mo, I'd register for 2T and 3T.

I'm completely clueless on children's clothes sizes and adopting a toddler is making it even more confusing. Our son is currently 20 months old and we got an update on his size when he was about 17 months. At this time, he was 30 inches and 20 lbs. we sent a care package recently, with all the clothes in size 18-24 months.

We will likely be bringing him home around christmas/new year's and my mom is planning a shower for early october. It is very unlikely we will get an update on his size in time to add it to the registry.

What size should we register for/tell people to buy? We dont want a ton of clothes because we're so unsure of his size but we dont want him running around naked either ;). I was thinking 2T?
