I wouldn't stock up too much on size 1 or 2s. They're not in them for very long. Size 3s though - they are in those for longer. Also, I did a quick calculation on how many days the box would last us. My LO wears 6 diapers a day + 1 overnight diaper so those jumbo packs (150ish diapers) would last us basically all month. Because of that, I didn't really stock up on that many boxes.

I used the baby bargains recommendation of 100 NB/500 size 1. We went through the newborn stash and bought a pack of 30 and got halfway through that before we moved to size 1s -- I think that took about 2 weeks. We are now 4.5 weeks and he's almost through his first box of 210 size 1s (I was a bit of an over zealous changer in the beginning weeks, now we only change if dirty or very fussy). We got pampers swaddles based on recommendations and they've worked out very well. I'm actually glad we stockpiled, it's one less thing we have had to worry about.

ETA LO was 7 lbs at birth, almost 8 lbs when we went up a size (wet diapers were bothering him more frequently). He's currently 9 lbs 7 oz

@buffalove: My son peed right through the Baby Dry once he started taking bigger bottles at night so we switched to Extra Protection a few months ago and no leaks! We switched to 3's when he was 15 lbs ish.

LO was 6lbs9oz at birth and wore NB for about 3-4 weeks. She then wore size 1 for about 6 weeks, size 2 for 6-8 weeks and then went on to size 3. Babies seem to wear size 3 the longest.

@winniebee: I just started using the Pampers Baby Dry/12 Hr - they were literally the only kind of overnight/extra protection the day I went to buy them on my lunch hour. Are the Pampers Extra Protection the same? They're worked well so far, but now I've found I need them during the day too sometimes. Does that happen to you? Or maybe I should just go up a size?

@winniebee: great point about the brands! I had bought all Pampers Swaddlers and now suddenly DS is starting to wet through at night (he's 7 months). Friends tell me that Huggies are sometimes better for boys, but I have a closet full of Pampers!

@bookworm: re: returning the diapers, they *should* exchange them without a problem, but I did have an issue at Target once. The computer wouldnt recognize the bar code (I'd bought them on clearance so there was actually a price tag). Anyhoos, my MIL brought them back for me on a different day and talked them into exchanging them ;)

My nieces were in size 2's til well over a year, and my little dude was barely in 2's....you just never know!

Now at 8mo and 20lbs he is in a size 4....

I'd say 1 and 2's. I wouldn't spend much on the newborn size because you just don't know how big the baby will be.
I'm being told that right now at 33 weeks she's measuring 6lbs...if that holds true I wouldn't be able to use newborn size at all. So, I always start with size 1.

@prettylizy: Good idea re: taping to the box!

It's weird, my son always outgrows diapers before the weight limit -- he has a long torso and ends up with lots of accidents when he is w/in a pound of the weight limit.

DD has been in 2's for ever, but every baby is different. I would keep receipts so (tape them to the box!) so that you can return any you don't want/need.

@Bookworm: I just read what @winniebee: and totally agree... I switched from Pampers Swaddlers to Huggies Pure and Natural due to fit when my DS started growing, so maybe you should wait on the 3's... :-)

I wouldn't stock up on larger sizes for the reason @winniebee mentioned. We started out with Pampers swaddlers, but he's now in the Target brand, which fits him the best out of the 10+ types of diapers we've tried. But size 1's are a good bet. It's seems most babies stay in 1's for a while.

I had a jumbo sized baby. We had to bring size ones to the hospital because they only had newborn and those were too small. She moved up to size 2s at three weeks so we have a ton of size 1s left over.
I'd recommend getting one big box of each size but not opening them until baby is here.

I think as they get older (size 3,4,5) the brand doesn't really matter as much. And those are the more expensive diapers.

I would get like 2 boxes of each size (1, 2, 3) and then after that maybe 3 boxes of 4, 5?

Something else to consider is maybe you don't want to stock up on larger sizes b/c you might end up having a different diaper preference once LO is here (I have stuck w/ Pampers Swaddlers all along, but I know people who started out w/ one brand and swtiched to another).

I wouldn't really stock up bc you may find that your LO doesn't get a very good fit in a certain brand (or that brand gives him a rash, etc). You may also find that your LO stays in one size for a while but then has a growth spurt and doesn't stay very long in the next size.

i think my son was in newborn size for a month, then size 1 for a month. I think one big box of NB to start out with is good and then stock up on some size 1's. It all depends on your baby's weight and how fast they gain.

Get some 1's. Size 2's don't start til 12 lbs and unless you have a HUGE baby (poor you!) your baby will be in 1's for at least a month. 8-10 diapers a day for the first few weeks.

My son was small, but he was in newborns for awhile as well (I think until 6 weeks).

A thread about budgeting reminded me that I wanted to ask; what's the best size of diapers to stock up on before baby gets here? Is there somewhere y'all found that has a good estimate of how many a baby needs at each size? I don't want to buy many newborns in case I have a hefty baby, so so far I've only bought two big boxes of size 2 when they were on sale. Should I buy some size 1s? More 2s? Advice, y'all!! :D

Oh, and yes, I am having a shower, but I'd rather have them and not need them/be able to exchange them, than be short...since money will be short! lol!
