Ugh. Weaning was what worked. She was previously nursing to sleep and then up screaming hysterically til she got the boob once or more each night til she self weaned right around 12 months.

DD2 is the strongest willed little being on this earth. Lots of hysterical screaming to the point that CIO just wasn't possible with another child in the house (and we did CIO, no checks with the older child). If I'd known she'd be an amazing sleepy once she stopped nursing, I might have cut her off earlier!

We used the Sleep Easy solution book and it worked very well for my LO. You both need to read most of the book and be super prepared so you and your DH can be very consistent! You might even want to leave the house the first for an hour or two for few nights and let DH handle it, its just too hard for mama to hear all that crying.

Basically Ferber, but we modified it and did checks at longer intervals from the beginning. Worked very well for us. We only trained for bedtime and I ended up still having to hold him for naps at that time. Eventually I kind of nap trained, extinction style, but it wasn't that bad. I think because he had learned how to fall asleep when we did Ferber, the extinction CIO for naps wasn't as bad as I thought it was going to be.

A modified No-Cry method. More or less followed Elizabth Pantley's book, except instead of rushing to her right away when she cried, gave it one or two minutes. eventually worked, but it takes longer than CIO....

I'm thinking we might have to go the no checks route. She would calm when we went in for checks but as soon as we left she would watch us leave and then cry HARDER. Sooooo hard to leave knowing what she was going to do! Did everyone do naps and nighttime at the same time? Or one than the other?

CIO, no checks.

When she was almost 2, we did CIO w/ checks. We initially did no checks, but it would take 2 hours for her to finally fall asleep. We attempted checks one night and it went so much better (only 2-3 checks total?). I think it's because she was able to understand, and we would talk to her when we came in for checks.

Ferber worked like a charm - we literally followed it by the book. We started at 4 months and it took three days to work - he took to it really well and there was pretty minimal crying involved. Bedtime has never been a battle since then (almost a year old now). We can put him down awake for bedtime and naps and he rarely fusses. He still woke up about once a night (to eat) until he was about 7.5 months old.

Ferber (extinction with checks). We tried once at around 4 months and it was a big fail, then tried again at 5.5 months and it worked. When it worked, we really only even needed the checks for 2 nights. She's almost 2 now and still sleeps very well. If she's sick or teething and seems to need us, we'll sometimes go in and sit or lay on the floor next to her crib and it calms her down. We've never had to "re-train".

CIO, no checks. She was already STTN, but we trained her to fall asleep on her own. We did naps/bedtime altogether and it was pretty easy.

Ferber, with timed checks was the only thing I was capable of handling. It did not work and after my son could no longer be swaddled, we had a bad patch between 6 and 11 months of age.

At 11 months, he was able to fall asleep himself, with a GloWorm as his lovey.

For DD1 we did CIO no checks, right around your LO'S age and it worked well. Checks were totally not for her. They just pissed her off. She never cried more than 3 o minutes to go down initially and when we started CIO for MOTN (at like 15 months) she never exceeded an hour. And it was never straight crying.

We've done some gentle sleep training with my almost 4 month old. We used the Sleepeasy Solution. But she's a totally different personality than her sister and I think we've never totaled more than 4 minutes of crying and she goes down for most naps on her own and always goes to bed on her own.

Yep, full on neglectful parent extinction CIO at about 5 months. Worked like a charm for us in 2 nights, and at nearly 18 months we haven't had any regressions that haven't been directly related to jetlag. Even when he's sick now he sleeps through, knock on wood.

We did modified ferber. We did 5, 10, and 15 min checks but didn't increase the time each night. We first did it for night time right about 6 months. First night it took her 2 hours to fall asleep and it was horrible. Second night it took her an hour. Third night she was up ALL FUCKING NIGHT. (<-- sorry but it was literally the worst night of her life). I should have given up and picked her up for that night at least because I think letting her cry with checks basically from 8pm until 4am when I gave up and brought her to bed with me was horrible for us all. Fourth night she fell asleep in like 30 min. From then on she rarely needed more than 1 check, and if she did I just rocked her because I figured something was wrong.

Honestly we've not been super consistent with things. I just don't have it in me to be hardcore. Even after we sleep trained for falling asleep I still rocked her MOTN if she woke up and wouldn't settle on her own. I also rocked her if she was sick or teething and cried much at bedtime, if we were traveling, or if we just thought her cry was worse than usual/she needed me.

We went from me having to hold her/rock her literally all night long to her falling asleep on her own most nights and waking up maybe 2-3 times/night. It was good enough for me and I didn't want to do CIO in the MOTN.

So that went on until 14 months and I was still getting up and rocking her at least once/night most nights that whole time and then suddenly rocking didn't work anymore. Just one day she was over it and would cry and try to get down when I rocked her and there was nothing I could do but set her down in the crib. So I gave up trying to rock her and the first night she cried 45 min in the MOTN. Second night 30 min. Third night STTN for the first time since she was like... 2 mo. That was a month ago and there has only been one time she cried for more than 1 minute in the MOTN and it was only like 15 min.

Oh also-- we don't do checks anymore. We stopped that somewhere around 10 mo or so. We realized that they were just pissing her off. When she was littler checks definitely helped. She would calm when I'd come in and talk to her and would try to sleep when I left (and usually fell asleep immediately after a check). When she got older she got pissssed when I left the room. So we never go in there at night unless we suspect an actual problem (like poop). Because it just makes it worse/extends the crying.

<<eek sorry for the novel>>

My almost 7 month old has been rocked, shushed, patted, nursed, bounced to sleep through colic and up until this point in her life and DH and I are at our wits end. She's 15 pounds (so rocking is not easy anymore) and bedtime is a battle that literally takes HOURS every night. Then after our bedtime battle she is up multiple times a night sometimes for extended periods of time requiring the same super movements to get back to sleep. It's exhausting and we are SO ready to sleep train. We tried CIO with checks a month ago and it was a disaster with the crying getting worse not better. What sleep training methods worked for you? How did it work? What did you have to do? Any sort of guidance at this point would be great....
