My mom was really good at making sure that we saw everything there was to see an do where ever we were living at the time (we moved 7 times in 12 years). I'm so thankful for that because I've seen more of this country than most people and I learned so much. My parents were small-business owners and rarely took days off work. My brother and I spent our weeklong breaks from school at home by ourselves, reading, playing, etc. Every Memorial and Fourth of July wknd though, my parents took us up north a lot and to Niagara Falls. Those were the "go-to" vacation spots for our family. We went camping for a few years with another family, but it always rained and to be honest, no one in our family is the “camping type” so we were all miserable, so we stopped that after a couple of years. One summer we drove back from KY to WA state, stopping at major historical attractions along the way, which was so much fun. We didn't camp but would rent cottages in NH every summer or go on road trips to Lake George or Six Flags in NJ. They play Disney movies every night outside and have a chip and dale sing a long, they redid the pool so it has a slide and a fun play area for littler kids, they have tons of activities like arts and crafts and hula hoop contests. We had a membership to a pool club, so that is what we did in the summer. I can count on one hand the destination vacations (Disney, Europe twice) and a few driving vacations to the shore north and south of where we live. DS on the other hand, is an international traveler. He's been on two transatlantic flights, visited 4 countries and we plan to continue. I wanted to go to London this month but we couldn't get tickets for the DaVinci exhibit, for example. We went to Jamaica twice and the Caribbean side of Mexico several times--they are kind of obsessed with all-inclusive resorts, and I'm an only child, so they didn't have a bunch of kids to pay for. I am grateful for the experiences, but I longed for variety, especially because I'm not really a beach person. My husband's family was much bigger on more frequent local trips and drives, which is what I'd like to do when we have kids. They were also much more spontaneous, and I'd like to be more like that than my parents are. I definitely want to save up for some big family trips, but there's so many cool things to see and do that aren't that far away. He drove us from CA to NY about three times... So I have been to a lot of US landmarks and states. Drove up to Vancouver too. Drove from LA to SF countless times. He also took me and my grandma to Europe when I was 16... Flew into Paris and he drove us around to Switzerland, Italy, the French Riviera, Spain. Our own family vacations will involve much less driving... more flying, more good food, and more r & r! our first full family vacation was to Maui this past summer. 2.0 was just 5 weeks old so I just nursed on the beach a lot and the toddler loved making sand castles all day... we had a blast! When I moved with my dad we went camping one time when I was in highschool and that is it. My parents did a great job of making the drive an adventure - we'd take several days to drive ther and back, stopping in different cities and seeing lots of historic sights along the way. DH and I are avid campers and recreational RV'ers, so there are lots of camping trips in LO's future. Disney is super commercialized! But I still love it, it's our fancy camping. It's not the same that it was when I was little, we stopped going when I hit hs because it was so commercialized. my parents met growing up there! and tmi..but i was conceived there. Did you ever go camping at Disney? We go every year in October and it's so much fun to see all the seasonal people there because they decorate their campsites and RVs for Halloween. They go all out, it's so neat. We had our annual things like camping and skiing out west. We'd visit lots of family in California, Ohio, and NY. And we went a lot of places just to see the country. We were always traveling. Unfortunatly we can't afford to travel like that now. We'll still do camping, and I'm hoping my parents take us skiing with them when my LO gets a little older. We aren't planning on taking our first big vacation that requires flying until my LO is almost one, and that's because my sister is getting married in NY so we'll make a vacation out of it. Luckily we live 10 minutes from a beach... so we can have a vacation like setting any time.
