My dad would always say no and his reason "because I said so" (which clearly isn't a reason) but my mom would always give us a reason why and we couldn't really argue... It was a big deal for us to own up to our mistakes and not push the blame onto someone else or make excuses. This is one that I will use with our future LOs as well. </p> <p>Nothing bothers me more as an adult than a coworker or acquaintance that makes excuses for a mistake they made instead of apologizing and owning up to it! They also taught us to be self sufficient, and not rely on or expect anyone else to support you (financially or emotionally). All things that I do not thing are taught enough in this country.<br /> Those are all things we will teach our children. They will learn to show respect for others, especially their elders. They will learn to work for things. There's no free ride. They will get chores to earn their "allowances" Heck I got $20 as a high school senior! They will learn integirty and to be honest. No lying allowed. My husband's 4 year old niece lies like no tomorrow and still lies when you catch her in a lie. Drives me insane. They will learn to appreciate everything they have in life and not take it for granted. I want them to know that how many people out there have it way worse than they will. I am inherently lazy, but I found ways over the years to trick myself into working hard. Integrity is something my mom exemplified, but mostly through her actions and not through her words — she didn't have a lot of sayings about integrity, as opposed to most everything else. :-)</p> <p>What sort of values did your parents instill in you... and do you want your own kids to have as well? </p>
