That was a big reason we went with the Kindle vs. the iPad/iPad mini. I think if cost were not in the equation, I would probably go for the iPad since I do think the fit &amp; finish of Apple products is great. But since cost was a big consideration, we went with the Kindle. We paid only ~$160 incl taxes for the 16GB w/special offers which is a steal. We have the Kindle Fire HDX (7") and the integration with Prime is great. I use it exactly the way you are talking about - mostly internet, reading, email and movies. No kids yet, but it has been pretty durable - pregnant clumsiness has led to it being dropped at least once per week and so far no issues! I also am able to use it to read outside, the screen brightness is pretty adjustable. My only downside is that it is incompatible with a web-based program that I use for work documentation, which I can access on my iphone. We have prime so for an extra $5 a month they each have Kindle Free time and it allows them to use the kindle w/o accessing the web. They can pick from 100's of apps and videos on Free Time and download it themselves!</p> <p>You can also set time limits for reading, videos, and apps</p> <p>Plus with Prime you can watch all kinds of kids movies for FREE!</p> <p>And they are pretty cheap!! But both are broken now (screen shattered). DD has an iPad mini and it doesn't seem as responsive as my old iPad. Maybe because it's 16GB and the one I had was 64GB?
