Thanks everyone. He is definitely going through some big leaps right now, so hopefully if we just stay the course he'll turn things around shortly. But man, this is exhausting.

@Little Misters Mom: Five and six months were terrible for us -- very similar to what you describe. And then inexplicably he will sleep so much better (like, one quick wakeup and even once through the night). Developmental changes have been huge sleep disrupters for us -- rolling over was one of the worst. He recently learned to pull up and crawl and it was the worst regression we've had -- only 4-5 wake ups but up for several hours at a time. So strange and awful. But then after a week or so it goes away.

Anyway, I can't offer advice because I have not figured out a solution other than time. I'm in a similar position too where I'm going back to work soon and not sure how I will handle it. But I can relate for sure!

i know the frustration. those books tell us what to do like everything will work magically if we follow the instructions and then BOOM baby is like "no ha ha sucker".

my first thought was whether your LO was going through any physical or cognitive developments, as i've heard that their brains are going a mile a minute and makes it harder for them to transition from one sleep cycle to the next.

another thought is whether your LO may be ready to drop a nap? just a thought.

5 months was our worst sleep period everrrrrrr! I think it was a combo of sleep cycle changes, milestones, teething, etc. you'll get through it!!!!

I'm wondering if he needs a longer wake time before bedtime. I'd just definitely plan to skip the fourth one at this time and make sure he's up 3ish hours before bedtime? It'd definitely be an experiment, but I'd stick with it for a week or so. I think that's what finally made our "after 1 hour of sleep at night" wake-up leave us. You don't want him overtired, but he still needs to be tired enough.

Just a thought. It's so hard.

@Jess1483: He isn't a great napper but has shown some signs of lengthening. He usually does 3 naps of 45 min to an hour. Very occasionally he'll do an hour and 20 minutes. I still try for a fourth nap but without much success. I put him down after 1:45-2 hours wakefulness depending in hid drowsy signs.

@Little Misters Mom: It does sound like you're doing a lot right, and what PP said about new skills is definitely true, but I do have a question about your nap schedule/total sleep? How many naps, how long, and what are the awake stretches? My guy was napping too long at different points, which made his night sleep hell.

@rachiecakes: He just learning to roll back to tummy so that may be part of it. We've tried gradually moving bedtime later but he wakes up ever earlier now (5am, he used to sleep to 6:15). You're probably right about the growth spurt, teething, developmental burst stuff. It feels so frustrating that its just out of our control.

@Little Misters Mom: It was true for us, but I feel like as babies learn how to do more things - like roll, scoot, sit up, stand, etc. - the frequent wake-ups are pretty common. Sometimes allowing for more awake time and pushing bedtime a bit later can help?

For us, once we had a routine, J would learn something new, be teething, etc. and it would start all over again.

This is more of a rant than anything. But last night DS was up 4 times, including a 2 hour screaming stretch at midnight. Despite the fact that we do everything the books say, his sleep somehow seems to be getting worse. I have to go back to work in 3 weeks and I have no idea how I'm going to survive.

DS is 5 months old. After sleep training, he goes down for both naps and bedtime drowsy but awake. He doesn't have any timed devices (mobiles, etc) for bedtime. We leave 20 minutes between nursing and sleep. We follow an EASY routine during the day. His bedtime is 6:15. He is 19 pounds and has slept through the night a handful of times so I know he can. Despite all this he is waking more and more often.

I'm so tired and so freaking frustrated.
