@Mae: Well, I am glad that they gave you something for it! I hope it helps. We tried Zantac, and it didn't work for my daughter, so if you don't see results within 1 week, don't be afraid to let them know! I am sorry you are having such a rough day. If it makes you feel any better, we are over here in no nap central also, she slept like absolute shit last night (as in 6 hours over a span of 12 hours, um what), and my husband is out of town! IT SUCKS. So, at least you aren't alone and that always make me feel better. Hope your daughter feels better soon and the eating battle lessens for you.

Well I took her to the doc, and she prescribed Zantac. And not a moment too soon. I've offered food 9 times today. Every offer has been met with a battle. It's 5 pm and I've only gotten her to eat 11 oz all day. And bc she is hungry (I'm sure) she is exhausted but won't nap. And bc she is hungry and tired she is cranky. And my husband has not been home before 8 yet this week and won't be home until after bed time tonight. The Zantac seriously HAS to work bc I am losing my freaking mind today. Sigh.

This sounds like what J does with his reflux. It's not every single feeding, either. But when I described the gagging/screaming, his ped immediately felt it was reflux and told me he was acting that way because his throat was burning from whatever was coming up (not always completely spit up; he doesn't spit up all that much). He's on Alimentum which helps a little bit but I don't think it will cure reflux, and he's on Zantac which makes things less acidic but also does not cure the reflux itself.

It's worth talking to your doctor before you switch formulas, though. Just in case!

@Callalily: gah I'm sorry, it is so stressful! Hungry babies should eat, right? I mean-- they have like one job-- eat. This is how our race has survived the millennia. So how come our kids won't do it? I hope we both find our answers soon!

I think we have the same baby, every one of your posts could have been written by me! We've got an appointment with a consultant pediatrician next week and hopefully we'll get some help. I'm not optimistic though :( In the meantime I literally spend every waking moment getting her to eat 25 oz of pumped milk per day! I hope you have some luck in figuring this out, I feel like silent reflux might be our problem, so maybe it is for you too.

Welp, I have an appointment tomorrow with her pediatrician to talk about reflux! I'm hoping that is the answer since it sounds like there would be a workable solution for it!

@anandam: I don't know... maybe? But I always offer a bottle immediately when she wakes up from a nap, so to offer it earlier would mean waking her up from sleeping. And I hope she is a good eater later! But I figure this is my penance either for her being a generally good sleeper and/or for my being a picky eater my whole life :)

This sounds a lot like reflux, but I'm not a doctor. My nephew had severe reflux and exhibited a lot of what you describe. He was seemingly a happy spitter (but spit up quite a bit) Once he was on zantac and switched to Alimentum he's been super happy.

I don't know anything about reflux (or about babies, let's be honest) but do you think maybe they can get "overhungry" and refuse food the way they get overtired and resist sleep? Before meds and diet changes my instinct (again based on no actual information and almost as little experience) would be to offer the bottle more often, maybe after an hour and a half or two hours.

ETA: I really hope she's a great eater as a toddler when the rest of us have picky kids, you deserve some stress-free mealtimes!

@Mrs Green Grass: To be fair, we really did not push the eating issue with the ped the last time we saw her. It was just a few days after quitting BF and getting Fia transitioned to bottles and the whole process had been such a clusterfuck that we thought this was just her being stubborn mostly. I really only asked about her spitting up hours after eating because it seemed to bother her, but I didn't ask about the flipping her shit when offered a bottle. I'm going to call today.

@matador84: what do you mean going through a can of formula before switching... why would we switch? We've always used the target brand of enamil gentlease... no real reason to switch I don't think?

I echo previous posts! Sounds like reflux. Our pedi urged us to go through a can of formula before switching kinds to avoid further tummy upset. How long is the nap between the 11 and 3 feeding?

@Mae: I've said this before, but it definitely sounds like reflux and I really think you should gets meds ASAP. I'm sure she is hungry, but it hurts to eat. A lot of kids with reflux like to snack throughout the day to coat their throat.

The doc should not be just asking about spitting up because silent reflux is common and does not involve spitting up (but you may hear gurgling) or see little amounts. The arching is the #1 symptom.

@Mae: I would definitely ask your ped about reflux. My daughter was diagnosed with silent reflux about 2 weeks ago and she was doing the exact same thing you are describing. But, not every time, just for some of the feedings. She has been taking nexium for almost 2 weeks and I see a definite improvement. When she eats now, she doesn't flip out and angry cry so I am confident she does have reflux and the meds are working. When she does the cough/choke thing, that is the acid coming back up and burning her throat and then my daughter makes the grossest face when she swallows it back down. My ped said her feeding refusal is because she's hungry, but knows that it is going to hurt when she spits back up so she'd rather not eat. So yes, talk to your dr about reflux!

@Mae: not fussy at all unless I was trying to feed her. She was totally happy to not eat, ever. Which is why it took until she was after 3 months for me to really pressure the doctor to test her stool---my Dr. kept telling me classic symptoms of an MSPI baby is lots of screaming and fussiness and LO didn't have that.

Except when eating.

@Anagram: Was your LO fussy sometimes and totally cool other times with eating? Thats one thing that confuses me so much is that more often than not (today notwithstanding), I give her a bottle and she sucks it down until she's full and then sorta just leaves her mouth open to signal she's done and it's just no big deal. But then randomly once or twice a day (more today, but that is unusual-- just annoying enough to cause me to post finally), she flips.

@beachbee: I have definitely noticed that she she sometimes does the gulping/swallowing thing. Both when she is not eating and also sometimes when she does when she's fighting. I assumed it was because there was milk in her mouth that was dripping down her throat and choking her? But maybe that? Is there a test for that? What do you do for it?

@Mae: we use Doc Brown bottles and they all came with size 1 nipples. At 7 months we are on size 3 now for a faster flow. I think then TT bottles come with different flow nipple types. It might be worth a shot to try the next one up! Our LO was just angry that he wasn't getting milk fast enough, but we went through a week of WTF!? before figuring it out.

My vote is for silent reflux. They can do a non-invasive barium test for it. Or go ahead and put her on Prevacid solutabs to see if that alleviates her problems!

We thought it might be milk/soy and eliminated it from my diet for three weeks...I have to tell you, that diet is HARD. Tons of food has soy in it. I kind of wish I'd had them do the barium test first because with all the other issues with a newborn who is not happy, it put a lot of undue stress on me and strained our already strained BF relationship.

I was thinking reflux also. It could be "silent reflux", meaning she's spitting up, but it's not coming all the way up and she's swallowing it back down. My LO's have had both types, and with silent, I hear gulping noises and often choking.

You may not want to hear this...but I would try eliminating dairy/soy (100%) from your diet for two weeks and switching the formula to Alimentum for the same time period and see if that changes things.

If there's no change in her feeding issues, then you'll at least be able to eliminate those as intolerances. And if there IS a change, then you have your answer.

That's very similar to how my LO acted at that age but my doctor never mentioned anything so I just kept keeping on--until right around 3 months we had a scary couple of weeks where I couldn't get LO to eat AT ALL without a struggle. She didn't eat more than 17 oz a day for 2 weeks straight and always with a long struggle, and many days as low as only 12 oz in a 24 hour period. She went from 50% in weight at 1 month appt, to 30 something at 2 months to 28% at her 3 month.

I didn't want her to keep going down the growth curve, so I eliminated dairy/soy on my own (halfheartedly) for a couple of weeks and then had her poops tested for blood (came back positive) and then eliminated 100% after that.

Sadly, I think I'd waited too long and LO was kind of scarred by the tummy pain drinking my milk gave her and her feeding issues continued until 10 months or so (she would only drink while asleep), but at least she started drinking normal amounts---24-30 oz a day.

@Tanjowen: I didn't know bottles had different nipple sizes... we've tried regular medela, tommee tippee and medela calma and of those the TT are by far the most successful, but I'd be willing to try a different bottle!

@loveisstrange: I keep talking to the doctor about that but she hasn't really "checked"? (is there a test for it?) She keeps asking about her spitting up. She does spit up a little bit when eating pretty often, most feedings, but it doesn't seem to bother her. However sometimes (once or twice a day?) she spits up an hour or two after eating and it seems to choke her and freak her out-- she usually cries. The doc said that if she starts getting bothered by spitting up more frequently to let her know... and that was the end of the convo?

So as anyone who pays attention knows, we've had LOTS of feeding issues. Cliffs notes are that I was trying to EBF but spent 8 weeks struggling with low supply, major nipple wounds, lip and tongue tie, nursing strikes, bottle strikes, and formula strikes which meant for 8 weeks there was no real consistency for a long period of time and she was breast fed, bottle fed breast milk, and bottle fed formula-- in varying combinations. At this point (for the past 3 weeks) she only gets bottles, both breast milk and formula.

About 2/3 of the time now she takes the bottle, no problem. But then randomly, once or twice a day, she flips her shit at taking the bottle. As soon as I get the bottle in her mouth she starts screaming, flailing, arching her back, the whole 9 yards. When she does, we try to calm her down and try again (with some tricks like walking around/bouncing her while trying again, giving her a paci first then switching out for a bottle, etc). Usually then after a few minutes she'll latch onto the bottle and go to town like she's starving. But sometimes we fight and fight and fight and she either eats, but fitfully (suck suck suck screeaaaammmmmm voraciously suck suck suck flaaaailll suck suck suck cryyyyyy). And sometimes we fight and fight and she just won't eat.

I'm almost always positive she IS hungry these times. The timing is right for her to be hungry, and other times when she is full she doesn't cry, she just leaves the bottle in her mouth but leaves her mouth open and doesn't suck. Since she usually does end up eating the times she flips her shit (and eating like she's starving)-- I feel like it isn't a lack of hunger issue.

But wtf is the issue then? Is this normal behavior for babies? I sort of thought that when they were hungry, and food was offered, they'd eat? Are we maybe still just working into our new bottle-only routine (even though it's been 3 weeks and her fighting the bottle is totally intermittent)?

I'm not really worried about her weight at this point, we win more battles than we lose and she is gaining on track. And if I had any confidence that she was legit not hungry I'd just let her be... but since I'm pretty sure she IS hungry I'm just not sure if there is anything I can do to decrease the drama in our house around meal times.

As an example of why she should be hungry, here was our (rougher than usual, admittedly) day today:

6am - feed 4 oz formula, distracted eating but not much drama

9am- feed 2 oz BM medium drama before eating 2 oz, then full out drama and abandoned feeding

11am- feed 3 oz BM with no drama, burped, when offered more she flipped her shit, high drama

3pm- woke up from a long nap screeaaaming in clear hunger, downed 6 oz BM like she'd been starved for a week

6pm- 2oz BM + 2 oz formula, no drama

9pm- huuuuge battle over eating anything at all, but did get down 4 oz breastmilk between screaming over the course of half an hour.

On "good" days she eats 4-5oz at a time. Thoughts?
