Nurse told us the same thing about rectal being accurate, & to add a degree to a different reading

Rectal is most accurate.. We use an ear thermometer but only for DD since she is older. I think the babies' ears are too small for the ear thermometer to be truly accurate since you can't get it in there very far.

Rectal temperature is supposed to be the most accurate. So far we have used an ear thermometer and go by the temperature range on this website: http://www.caringforkids.cps.ca/handouts/fever_and_temperature_taking

This website has a range of normal temperatures for the various methods of taking a baby's temperature. Scroll down to "what is a normal temperature".

I think a rectal temp is the most accurate. We use a temporal one for doing quick checks but I know it isn't accurate. Ours is about 1 degree lower than our rectal thermometer.

Daycare uses an ear one and it always seems higher than our rectal one. Convenient for them!
:-P

I *just* read somewhere that a rectal temp is the most accurate. I didn't even know these existed until I read about it!

I had to pick up LO from daycare yesterday because she wasn't eating and had a fever according to daycare's temporal thermometer. I rushed over (in my work from home "not meant for public eyes" outfit) and I could hear her screaming from the parking lot. :-( She was really warm to the touch so I checked her temp again with the daycare's thermometer and it was 100.2. I had a rectal thermometer in my diaper bag and her temp was 102.5. I rechecked a minute later with the rectal and it was still 102.5.

What thermometer do you use? I think a rectal thermometer is most accurate but isn't the most convenient....does anyone use an ear thermometer?
