Similar to your straw situation, My older DD (almost 3) has started always wanting a certain color bowl/cup/spoon. Right now DD2 (one) doesn't care what she gets, but I anticipate needing to switch to identical or all personalized (with their name) items.

The toys they fight over most are specific bristle block pieces and the babies rom their Little People sets. And yes, the one year old is actively involved in the squabbles - she shakes her fists and grumbles at her big sister!

@Andrea: Haha, that must be it!

In similar exasperating news, we bought silicone straws for the kids, and figured we might as well get them in the kids' favorite colors. Well now my daughter regularly rejects whatever straw she's given, and demands a straw in a different color! It's like... it's the same straw, just deal with it!!

@Andrea: Ah wow, why do they fight over the items if they're identical? ps Labels... genius!!

Ha, getting two of things doesn't even help. They still manage to fight over identical items. So I've taken to labeling their names on stuff!

Today I took the kids out for a slice of pizza, and got them separate bottled waters (the place didn't offer tap). I figured if I got them a single bottled water, a fight might break out at some point. Maybe I was just being a pessimist, but I didn't have the energy to deal with it so I just got two.

They also used to fight over MagnaTiles until we got a bunch more, so that's not an issue any more. I don't love this as a general approach though. I'm working on getting them to work out any conflicts between them, rather than just getting two of things.
