Well, we're not having trouble with night time (in bed by 8:30-9 P.M.); but it's what time he wakes up now - 5:30 A.M.! And he refuses to lie back down for a little bit longer. So... and only because we have help and we live in a single floor apartment, I just get him out of bed (he is perfectly able to get off himself, but wants me to go get him anyway!), turn on a light and let him play while I go back to bed. Shortly he wakes up his big brother and they start making a ton of sound by 6 A.M. so I rarely ever get to fully fall asleep. They even come into my room and jump on the bed or ask me to help with this and that. I hope he starts to sleep later soon. I'll take 7 A.M. please!

I think the bedtime is too early! We put L on the bath at 8 and then just go through the process. I am typically walking out of her room by 9 and we don't hear from her again until 7am.

Hear hear
We went through a rough time like u described for a few months... Until we talked to our pediatrician at well visit. The doc, who used to instruct us to put him to bed at 7-730am, now tell us it is ok to put him down at 8-830p or even 9 pm!! It is becuz they r at the stage where they are almost gonna drop the nap but isn't quite ready yet so they r not tired by 730pm.

Now it is much better... He wakes around 6:45am, naps at school at around 1-3pm , and bedtime between 8-830 pm. He doesn't fight as much as he used to. So I think it is a phase plus later bedtime. On weekends nap is even optional but then u have to make a commitment to put him down earlier. Lo is now 3 years 4 months.

I think it's a phase in part. LO is a later 3 (3y8m) and bedtime just recently got better. We start bedtime at 8:00 - bathroom, teeth, pjs and books. I usually leave her room at about 8:30 and she's quiet. She might play a bit in her bed but is generally asleep by 9:00. She's waking between 6:30 and 7:00 most days. She's still napping as well for about 90 minutes. Naps have become shorter but she still needs it.

LO is a few weeks shy of his 3rd birthday, and we dropped the afternoon nap this past week! ack!

it's helped him fall asleep much better, though. his bedtime is 7:30 and wakes up between 6:30-7am. now he falls asleep right away, and seems sleepy at bedtime.

previously, he wouldn't be that tired at 7:30, so would come out of his room 2-3 times before falling asleep around 8:30. I dropped his nap though, mainly because he was refusing to go down for it.... not gonna lie, it's been exhausting keeping him quiet for those 2-3 hours in the afternoon when his little brother is taking his afternoon nap!

My three year old is up until 10 or later if she naps, but she still really needs the nap. It's totally unsolvable. Thankfully we're a pretty late to bed late to rise family, so it isn't too surprising. But I keep hoping she'll drop that nap. When she doesn't get a nap, she goes right to bed at 8:30, but then she's sometimes crazy in the evening.

(LO is a month shy of 3). Usually she falls asleep between 8:30 and 9, tho it's 9:45 tonight and she's going strong. Bedtime is a multi hour process. It sucks. She still naps 1.5-2 hours at daycare, and is up between 6:30-7 most days, occasionally a bit later.

I think her bedtime is too early too! At 3, we had to push bedtime back to 8:30 (to start the bedtime routine) and then she'd sleep by 9-9:30. She was still taking a 2 hr nap in the afternoon though cuz she needed it. She didn't drop her nap until a little past age 4. I was willing to do a later bedtime for that midday nap, esp since I had a #2 that had to nap anyway.

We do exactly what @BananaPancakes: does - at 7:30 we do bath, teeth, water and she gets about 30 minutes of book time, stories (made up stories), snuggles and chit chat. I try to leave her room by 8:30 at the latest. She will call out 1-2x and I will come in and say "good night, go to sleep" and leave before she can engage in conversation. but eventually she will fall asleep by 9pm.

We try to go to the park and do some kind of exercise between dinner time and bedtime, and I found that helps her sleep better at night. She will usually sleep from 9 to 7:30 on those nights. I also want to skip her nap but it's so hard to let go of it.

It sounds like you're putting her to bed too early...especially if it takes an hour to fall asleep!

@regberadaisy: Sometimes he was refusing but it was sort of hit or miss. I tried to implement "quiet time" in his room but that was a total disaster…I would be trying to put his brother down and he would always find some reason to barge in/wake him up. Eventually I just started putting a show on for him while I put his brother to bed and then we would find something quiet to do together while the little guy slept. I'd like to say that it's nice to be able to focus on the older one and age appropriate activities (it is!) but to be honest, it has been completely draining.

@regberadaisy: He's up between 6-7. It just depends on the day. And I can't give you much advice on the leaving the room/screaming thing since we've been lucky that he's not much of a fighter at this point. But I do know that we really have to have a lot of one-on-one time at bed and to snuggle for a bit before leaving, or he has a more difficult time relaxing.
Our routine goes: get in bed together at 8, read 3 books of his choosing, turn off the light and cuddle/sing for about 10 minutes. Then I leave the room. He sometimes fusses or yells "mommy come lay with me," but I just tell him I love him at the door and that its night night time, and then I shut thedoor. This started a few months after 2. Before that, he would go down with 1 book and nothing else, and pass out in 5 minutes every time at 7:30, so it was a big change.

@regberadaisy: my son began refusing the nap and I had to get rid of it anyway, because he was beginning an afternoon preschool program in September. The hardest thing for us was to get rid of the nap on the weekend...every once in a while we do take a quick nap and I remember why we got rid of it that night when it's bedtime.

I totally get needing the time, maybe you can try quiet time in her room...full disclosure, this doesn't work for my son, but several moms on here seem to have success with it.

Yeah... shortly after 3 we had to drop the nap, otherwise he wouldn't go to sleep until 10 pm. So now we have no nap and bedtime at 8, up around 7. Every 10 days or so, he does end up falling asleep mid-day and then I know bedtime is going to be late. :/

My son's night sleep got a lot better when we dropped his afternoon nap. He'd be awake in bed for up to 2 hours. Once we dropped the nap, he's asleep in minutes. He was 3 years 8 months when he dropped it, bedtime has been 7:30 since he was born, basically.

@BananaPancakes: what time does he wake for the day?
She takes a 1-1.5 hr nap at 1pm. If I have to be completely honest I don't think she's ready for a 730 bedtime any more. I don't mind pushing it to 8 and letting her do her thing till she falls asleep. But the leaving the room, kicking and screaming and coming into the nursery when I'm trying to put A down is frustrating!

Do you shut lights off for him? I'm wondering if a table lamp she can turn off when she's ready for bed might be better?

We start bedtime routine at 8 (reading books or storytelling), and I usually walk out of the room around 8:30. He's sometimes asleep by 9, and sometimes 9:30. Every once and a while it's close to 10 before he actually passes out. I put him down at 7, then 7:30 until he was around 2.5, but it became obvious he was not ready for bed at that time. I think he really needs a ton of downtime to get sleepy because it doesn't seem to matter how hard he plays that day. That said, he still naps about 2.5 hours, so I'm sure that has some to do with it.

Please tell me there's a 3yr sleep regression because I'm beyond frustrated with her sleep right now. We put her to bed around 7-730. She does usually take an hour to fall asleep. But before she'll pull a couple bathroom trips then play in her room till she falls asleep. This week it's been fake bathroom trips, tantrums, screaming, inevitably waking her baby sister up. Then she doesn't sleep till almost 10pm and is up for the day by 6-630am. I'm already exhausted because dd2 wakes every 1-2 hours, every night. Now I'm even losing the 1-1.5 hours of peace and alone time with DH before I crash for the night.
Not to mention, that can't possibly be enough overnight sleep for her even though she's always had low sleep needs.

Please tell me this passes. :bummed:
