Sounds like you might go fast! Mine took 48 hours from check in to delivery exactly. I was bored the first day. Bring movies!

@aprk: I was exactly the same! 3cm, 80%. To give you an idea of what it MIGHT be like for you... I went in at 7am, had my water broken at 8, pitocin started at 9am, epidural at noon, epidural turned down at 4pm, first push at 5:12, Sadie was born at 5:30pm! 3cm is a GREAT place to start. I got my epidural at 5cm.

@photojane: I'm 3 cm and 80% effaced so I'm hoping mine will go smoothly too!

@aprk: Good luck! I love, loved my induction, so I hope you have a similar awesome experience! Are you dilated at all? I went in at 3 cm, and my induction went super quickly.

We just talked & watched the TV in the room during the early part of the day. Once the pitocin contractions kicked in I didn't want to do anything but cry & grab the bed and breathe. After the epidural we just spent some time talking & resting up for the big moment. I didn't bring a bunch of stuff, because I wanted to be in the moment & enjoy that time with my husband and family. We're talkers though. :)

Good luck! I loved having our nook to play pandora. My sister brought scrabble and it was really fun :) Agree on eating before, but eat blandly so it won't be awful to throw up during labor! Otherwise we just chatted and watched tv. My induction was pretty short...11 hrs.

YAY! (not to the health issues but to meeting your little guy soon!!)

I was way too distracted by everything going on and our visitors (which I don't think will be a problem for you) to focus on anything, but honestly I think your phone/laptop will be enough.

Good luck!! I will be thinking of you!! :)

@highwire: yes! I wasn't able to eat for 4 days!
The thing that I used the most was a notepad and pen. I kept track of how things progressed, as well as kept track of my meds.

My induction was started at night and the helpful thing for me was having the laptop, I was able to watch a movie to help me relax and get some rest before the big stuff happened! Once contractions started I was concentrating on breathing and getting through the contractions so didn't need anything else to entertain me. I took candy and lemonade with me which I ate/drank in the early part of labor which I found handy. Good luck, you're gonna have your baby in your arms soon!

I read and slept through most of the early part of my induction. Take a book or e-reader, for sure. I had a book and my iPad with movies on it. After it got intense, I didn't do much of anything and didn't need anything to entertain me.

Had my epidural worked, I could see having continued reading or sleeping.

Good luck!

My induction (due to high blood pressure, swelling and protein in urine) is scheduled for tomorrow morning, so *almost* birth in progress ...

I am simultaneously excited and sort of scared. I know it could take more than a day from start to finish. Since we had been originally planning to labor at home as long as possible before going into the hospital, I am trying to come to terms with everything suddenly being different. The best laid plans and all that ;)

My question is - what should we bring to the hospital to entertain/distract us? Anything you brought that was super helpful, or something that you would recommended leaving at home?
