I was thinking food (especially things like sushi or cookie-dough ice cream she might be missing since being pregnant), a pretty robe or nursing gown she can wear instead of an ugly hospital gown.

for me the food did it. I craved some chocolatines, (pastries) so much. That and sangria, but that was too soon (seeing i was going to breastfeed) lol

If you bring food, something that doesn't need to go in the fridge is good. My MIL brought some wrapped chocolates what we offered to others when they visited.
I would have loved to have some mindless reading, like magazines. Unscented handcreme and lip balm are nice ideas.

I"ve not given birth, but I'd think that snacks/gift cards would be greatly appreciated. Or maybe come with a small gift but promise to deliver homemade frozen meals once their home? I've heard that frozen meals that they can just heat up are appreciated.

Two close friends of mine & the hubs (the hubs and mine?) just had a baby today! We're planning on visiting them in the hospital tomorrow (she had a c-section, so they will be there for a couple of more days), and I was wondering what we should bring them, if anything at all. In the past, I've brought:

-chocolate covered strawberries (or other snacks)
-Jamba Juice for the new mom & dad
-Starbucks for the new mom & dad

I've heard that the following are bad/inconvenient:

-gifts for baby (just more crap they have to take home/takes up valuable hospital goodies/freebies space)
-flowers (allergies, pain in the ass to take home)
-balloons (PITA)

New moms or moms who had visitors at the hospital: do you have any recs? Trashy gossip magazines? Maybe a gift card to a local takeout place (so Dad can take care of the first few meals)? Or should I just bring well wishes?
