@regberadaisy: oh no! So you had no signs it was turning into pneumonia, just coughing and pain? Scary...

@jedeve: it's a square of paper with a layer of mustard powder. They go on the chest and back for a few minutes before bedtime, and I think the way it works is it's a strong irritant and increases blood flow. I tried it again last night though and it only helped for a little bit, then I was up for hours again. I took today off for a family party, and am trying to get a doctor appointment instead :sad: . Feel better soon too!

@Mama Bird: what's a mustard plaster? I am miserably sick right now and can use any trick!

One thing I find that helps is showering first thing in the morning. It helps get all that gunk out before it settles.

With my last pregnancy my cough got pretty bad. I wasn't sleeping and practically cracked a rib. Hurt like hell every time I coughed and the pain remained for months after. I had finally gone to the doctor for some relief and found out it turned into pneumonia! The doctor Ok robitussum. I am def a ride it out no meds kinda gal but when things start hurting just from breathing it's time to take some meds!

Go to the doctor!!!

@Mama Bird: yay! Glad it helped! I tried everything with my cough and nothing helped.

@Bluemasonjar: @LulaBee: feel better soon!

@jedeve: that sounds awful! You're right, it's not good for the baby if mom is sick and miserable! Still hoping to beat this with over the counter stuff, but if it doesn't work I'm going to the doctor...

@LuLu Mom: yikes! I hope they helped fast. Being this sick right before baby is due is one of my biggest fears!

So last night DH made me a eucalyptus breathing treatment and a mustard plaster. I didn't cough once all night!!! The night before, I was up for hours trying to stop coughing. It was back in the morning, but feels a lot less intense. Very impressed!

I had a cold that turned into a bad cough....and I let it go and then it turned to bronchitis which was awful. I had to take a cough medicine with codeine and an antibiotic, neither of which I wanted to do in my third trimester but my doctor insisted that I get healthy before my C-section.

I had whooping cough my first pregnancy and my second one I had bronchitis. It is soooo miserable. You have my sympathies!

While not taking anything is certainly admirable, at a certain point I figured I was so sick and not sleeping that that couldn't be good for the baby either. My MW prescribed me some codeine, and I only took a little bit. Cepacol cough drops work great too - they numb your throat. Also a neti pot. And lots of honey!!

I'm in my first tri and just had bronchitis. Doc told me to do saline rinse, Tylenol cough syrup (bright blue kind), and prescribed some weird cough suppressant pearl things that I didn't take because I was worried I was taking too much. Oh, and he gave me a steroid shot. I think most things are "category C" which means they are okay to take.

@Dandelion: @MrsHansen82: @SleepyMonkey: @Rocker2014: @SweetiePie: thank you all! I haven't tried any of these, but I will!

@Banana330: I'm trying the showers too! It seems to help, but only for a little while :bummed: Hope you're feeling better!

@Ocean girl: thanks! yeah I hope it just goes away on its own... Or at least with just lots of hot tea :happy:

@SeptMomma12: oh no, I hope you're feeling much better now! That sounds so scary. Ricola is pretty good, though last time it didn't really touch the cough... seems to be working a bit better this time!

I just had this happen. After 2+ weeks (and feeling like I was going to cough the baby out), I finally went to urgent care and it turned out I was wheezing pretty bad. I really wanted to ride it out, but my OB said I needed to take an antibiotic and clear it up to make sure I was getting enough oxygen. Still coughing a little 4 days later, but the amoxicillin really did the trick. That being said, my OB said OTC cough drops are fine (she specifically mentioned Ricola) and Mucinex is considered safe if needed. Feel better! It really sucks.

I have always just ridden them out... My doctor is pretty adamant about not taking anything OTC while pregnant. Tylenol only... If it is just a cold/viral, it should resolve on its own, eventually.

Hope you feel better soon!

I got one last week at 38w. I stuck to hot showers, and saline nasal spray to clear out my nose. They both really helped. Honey can help if it's dry and tickly cough. My coughs tend to sound awful and don't really respond to cough syrups, I usually end up needing my inhaler when I get one.

I had the worst cough before i delivered dd2. It was caused by post nasal drip even though i didnt have a runny nose or anything. I couldnt sleep because of the cough and laying down made it worse. Over the counter cough stuff did absolutely nothing for me, but Sudafed really helped since it dried up the post nasal drip. Unfortunately sudafed is a stimulant so i still had trouble falling asleep. My ob also prescribed cough syrup that was a stronger version of robitussin. Not sure if that really helped either. As soon as i delivered, she gave me cough syrup with codeine. That helped a lot!

Whenever I have a cough I keep a tin of Altoids. The strong peppermint numbs my throat for a bit and suppresses the tickle.

I have a cold that's turned into a really nasty cough. Any tips? What's safe to take? I usually beat colds before it comes to this, but last time I had a cough this bad, I cracked a rib and ended up on antibiotics because it went on for two weeks. I'm scared it might come to that again - I know some antibiotics are supposed to be safe, but what if baby has a bad reaction to them?
