@locavore_mama: just a heads up, if people are offering you more money than what you listed it for, it could be a scam.

I hope for your sake it's not though! Nothing like getting a weight (literally and figuratively) off your shoulders!!!!!

Glad you listed it - Craigslist can be a pain but it's definitely the way to go for this.

I just sold my 2002 Focus on CL, needing a transmission repair that was almost the amount the car was worth. It was out of my yard within 3 days for the amount I wanted. I took it to two different dealerships who had said they wanted '02 Focuses to add to their inventory (and after telling them up front that it needs a transmission repair) I got to the dealerships and they said no, nevermind. HUGE waste of time. So glad you're getting a good price for it!

You could also see what a local junkyard would offer you. You might also be able to sell the decent tires on Craigslist.

@MSBartlett: thank you! That is very helpful!!
We're in no rush to get rid of it so I think we might go the Craigslitst route after looking at Blue Book. BTW that's exactly what DH & FIL said. ;)
We might get a second opinion at a dealership and see what they'll offer us.

It's just not worth it for us to pay a mechanic to do the work but for someone handy with cars who can get a motor at a junkyard it might be.

I use to work at a car dealership that just bought old cars and my DH works as a service manager for a dealership. I would completely agree that trying to sell the car is the best option.
I don't believe that there would be a difference in price between selling to a dealership and carmax. Selling to either does not offer the most amount of money you can get since they have to resell and try to earn money as well. However, if you are looking to quickly get it off your hands and get some cash that may be the way to go.
Also, you could try to sell the car for retail through Craiglist or something. There are definite handy people that buy old cars that may need some work and think it is worth it just to install a motor themselves.
You can check the value of the car through Kelly Blue Book to possibly take a look at what the resale value could be. To get an accurate reflection you have to be as honest as possible with the condition of the car.
In terms of mileage, if you have under 100k then it would be worth more than if it is over. The value of a car depreciates once it hits 100k miles.

Hope this helped!

@regberadaisy: Hmm, maybe that wouldn't work then. With carmax they buy used cars. I feel like you get a better deal than selling to a dealership.

@Espion: this car was my BILs. It's not worth putting the money it will cost to put a new motor in if we compare possible resale value. DH and FIL are both car guys and that's their opinion and mine too. It's not dependable at all!

Meh, I'm not a car person by any means, but my mother and sister both had Fords and they fell apart on them. My 2003 Honda Civic has 224,000+ miles and is still rock-a-lockin'.

I would see how much the repair is and determine your threshold price: if it is above a certain point, then sell (in parts or trade in) and if it is below a certain price, you may be justified in looking at a new/used car. Getting a new vehicle will cost considerably more, even if it costs 3k to fix the car. At least, that's how I would look at it with our budget.

@MarieJ: DH thinks it'll be in the 1-3K range and honestly the car is not worth it. We will not get that money back when we go to sell. So it's not worth it to put the money into it.

DH is the only driver right now so when I start driving I was going to drive that car. But we could use the money on selling this car towards a beater for me.

Would you buy another car to replace it or just use one car?

If you are buying another car, I would get the ford explorer fixed, JMO. 100k miles is not a lot considering it's a 2003 and I would rather pay 1k to fix it rather than buying a new car.

We have a secondary car that is in the shop again. Just found out the motor ceased....while sitting in our driveway!! Gr. We're waiting for a quote but it's really just to buy us more time. We're thinking it's going to be upwards of 1K-3K to fix it which is not worth it to us. The car is a '03 Ford Explorer.

Trying to figure out if it's a better idea to sell it as is on Craigslist or ask the mechanic if he knows of a place that will buy it as is or sell it for parts?

Like I said, it's a '03 Ford Explorer, there are new tires that barely have 10K miles on them. The car itself has ~ 100K miles, I think? A new starter that we just paid ~$300 for!

Anyone been in a similar situation? What did you do?
