CLIP IT!!!! It is 100% untrue that lip ties don't affect breastfeeding--obviously, based on your experience, they do! In addition lip ties are almost always found along with posterior tongue ties, which are easily missed by people not trained to look for them. I really really really suggest seeing a different IBCLC or your pedi. We had our LO's PTT cut in an ENT's office but some pedis will do it. It was done at 2 weeks and he cried for like 10 seconds and then was totally fine. I do think that getting it done saved our breastfeeding relationship, as did a great LC.

I really can't stress enough that the clipping procedure is SO EASY and SO FAST and there is really no reason to NOT do it, especially if you are already experiencing negative side effects from the TT and Lip tie. Good luck!

We had LO's lip and tongue tie clipped (using a laser) at 5 weeks. It was really quick and he was more upset about his arms being held down than the procedure itself. Immediately after, he latched right on and it made a huge difference in his nursing.

Ask @erinpye about this. She's our resident expert!

It is likely your LO also has a posterior tongue tie, as well as upper lip tie (I think there is like an 80% chance Of having both if you have one).

If it is inhibiting proper milk transfer and causing your LO to have pain and GI distress, it is recommended you get it lasered.

Erinpye has a list of doctors who perform the procedure, maybe you can find one in your area.

Good luck!

Upper lip ties are almost always coupled with posterior tongue ties. I thought my LO had an upper lip tie but it turned out it wasn't really a problem. The tongue tie was, even though it was tiny, and things got much better after it was clipped. I'm surprised your LC didn't check for a posterior tongue tie. Anyway, I'd start by either seeing if your ped can recommend an ENT or getting the LC's list of recommendations.

I think an ent is the best option. Call your ped and ask if they recommend anyone.

DD is 2 weeks old and after having severe nipple pain and it getting worse, not better I figured out she has an upper lip tie and has all the symptoms as well: poor latch, falling asleep at the boob after not nursing very long, reflux, gas. I'm in a lot of pain trying to nurse her but can't take it anymore and have been giving her a bottle of pumped milk. I've done a little research and it seems it's best to have it clipped/ lasered. Who do we see to have this done? Pedi? ENT? Dentist? I spoke to an LC about this and to see if she could guide me somewhere but she acted like lip ties are no big deal and shouldn't affect breastfeeding.

Any suggestions would be helpful!!
