@Thehistoryofus: yeah I was really surprised at how injured he was. I probably will have to get some kind of video monitor if I want to find out what exactly is going on. My DD was like your LO, she would stand and scream but eventually just "sit" down rather than fall. But DS is different!

Wow, he must be falling pretty hard. We had to do some sleep training and LO would stand and scream at us. She finally would give up and literally "drop" to the bed and sometimes hit the rails in the process. As soon as she laid down she was asleep. We never noticed any bruising or scabs though.

@banana: We have 2 sets of these http://www.amazon.com/Friendly-Toys-Little-Playzone-Lights/dp/B008CMQTZI/ref=sr_1_cc_1?s=aps&ie=UTF8&qid=1353356206&sr=1-1-catcorr&keywords=playzone

I don't think it's ideal but I also don't want to spend more $$ on something I already have. But LO may get the wrong idea and think bedtime is playtime, so I'll have to think about that one! Sigh, too many options.

@T-Mom: Oh, if you have one already, you can probably make it work! Our gate was a little bigger than our bed so we rolled up blankets and stuffed them in the empty spaces.

@T-Mom: Yup, a baby fence! This is the one we used:

http://www.amazon.com/Summer-Infant-Secure-Surround-Play/dp/B000G1YW98/ref=sr_1_5?s=baby-products&ie=UTF8&qid=1337624398&sr=1-5

We had a full-sized mattress on the floor and surrounded it with this gate. @chopsuey119 had the same fence but I think her set up was different. I think she had 3 sides covered, with one side of the mattress up against the wall?

My son slept in this for MONTHS (like 12 months I think?). He loved his floor "crib".

@T-Mom: maybe you could bubble wrap the entire railing? It's not the most attractive thing but my friend bubble wrapped the glass edges of her entertainment center to baby proof it!

@T-Mom: it is at the lowest setting. The side rails still do damage :/
Oh and most video monitors do have night vision, even my crappy Summer Infant $100 one. ;) Not that it really helps but at least you see what's going on.

@rachiecakes: you know, I actually think we didn't lower DS's crib to the lowest setting yet, so he is probably at the perfect angle to hit his face on the railing when he trips. I probably should lower it. Are you guys at the lowest setting already?

@T-Mom: YES! I've seen DS walking across his mattress and he'll go to grab the sides and trip where his arms go through the slats and smack! right into the rails. I saw him do this yesterday and he still has a tiny bruise on his cheek :(

@banana: we did just a mattress on the floor for DD until she was ready for a big girl bed, so I may try that for DS, but she was at least 18 months by then. When you say plastic fence, what do you mean by that.. like a baby gate? Having trouble envisioning what that looks like. I don't really want him getting up and walking around in the middle of the night.

@Andrea: I have been looking into the railing covers but haven't really found one that covers every single edge that he could potentially bonk himself on. I feel terrible, he looks so bad and I'm worried that people are going to call DPS on me!

If you're planning on doing a floor bed at some point anyway, this would be a great time to introduce the floor bed. My son LOVED his floor bed. We contained it by putting up a plastic fence all around the bed. It worked perfectly! Then once he was ready to move to his big boy bed, we simply put the floor bed (mattress) onto the bed frame. He didn't even know the difference! I love floor beds. We're planning on doing a floor bed for my DD too.

A padded crib railing would probably work too if you want to stay with the crib. I've never personally used one but I imagine it would work fine?

Anyone have a railing cover for your crib? Is it padded enough to prevent injury from head bonking?

What would you do in this situation - move to floor bed?

My LO is 14 months and is sleeping in the crib. Sometimes he stands up in his crib in the middle of the night and then lies back down. Twice in the past week, he woke up in the middle night. Both times, I heard a loud "Bonk" and then he started crying but settled down after some patting. The next morning, I noticed injuries to his face. A cut at the corner of his eye that has formed a large scab, and this morning it is an inch long bruise and scrape. I have no idea what is happening, but I can only assume that he is hitting the railing while trying to lie back down.

Anyone have this happen with their LO? I am thinking he may need to move to a floor bed, but was really not wanting to do this for a while since I like him to be contained. Or, would you recommend some kind of padded railing cover? Thanks!
