Yeah, from that area you can take the street car or the max anywhere - to OMSI, the zoo, the Children's museum. Those are all cool, but honestly I'd just stick to the parks in the Pearl district. Jamison square is the best fountain park in town, and next to it are Tanner Springs park, and The Fields park, two really cool new parks. There is also a fun indoor playplace called Playdate PDX in the area between the Pearl and where you'll be. Also make sure to check out Powell's, Bluestar Donuts, Lardo (for lunch), and all the other amazing things in that area. The streetcar will take you to a ton of great places.

Le Happy creperie and Escape from New York pizza are in that area, and they are two of my favorite places in town.

I loved the rose garden and zen garden. We also drove to the Multnomah Falls, it was very close. The hike to the top was not bad, it was quite busy there too. http://www.oregon.com/attractions/multnomah_falls

@golizzzard: skip the car. You can walk bus or light rail everywhere. It's a
PITA to park in NW anyway

@golizzzard: you could take the bus from 23rd to get to the train but there are no train stops right on 23rd.

Eta- I think there's a train that runs along lovejoy or one of the side streets so you might be ok! Check out the trimet website for the max stops.

Thanks for all the recommendations. The splash pads looks awesome. I'll see which ones are nearby. We're staying in the Alphabet District on 23rd St. near Salt and Straw.

Do you think we'll need a car? We arrive on a Thursday and leave early Sunday.

There are a bunch of splash pads/fountains around the city. The one in Jameson park is my favorite and always full with kids. There are tons of good parks. Depending on where you're staying, the westmoreland natural park is awesome and they have a sand/water area where the smaller babies like to play. The children's museum has a toddler area but u haven't tried it out yet since my little guy isn't walking quite yet. I second OMSI and even if your LO isn't old enough to participate, there is still plenty to look at. The zoo is always good.

Love the Oregon zoo and rose garden! If it's warm there's a great little splash pad/swimming area in the Pearl District. The streetcar is simple but DD would have loved riding it at that age I think.

Oregon Zoo, Powell's Books, Rose garden, walks along the esplanade, maybe OMSI (not sure on age appropriateness of latter since I haven't been there in a long time).

We'll be taking our first airplane ride with our 1 year old this June to Portland. We're excited for this mini-vacay but need ideas on where to stay (we're doing Airbnb) and what to do in Portland. Thanks.
