@mediagirl: I definitely understand how overwhelming it is. For the first few weeks of my daughter's life we were breastfeeding, formula feeding, and pumping. Basically all I did was feed my baby. It was exhausting, and it led me to a pretty bad place mentally. So if you're going crazy with all of the feeding rules, try to give yourself a break at some point.

A lc may help. I have had good luck with la leche league too. We have dealt with failure to thrive due to milk soy protein intollerance. He wasnt digesting the food he was given.

Keep up the good work and working with your ped. I don't know your ped but if they aren't pro breastfeeding you may want to get a second opinion. Mine didn't know anything about mspi.

@winniebee: Yes, 4oz. Sigh. Can I blame it on Mommy brain? :)
I get a little over an ounce out of each breast when I pump if she hasn't eaten on that side. If she has been on that side, I hardly get anything out.

@skibobrown: I know it's not evil! I was a formula baby after 3 months and I'm healthy. I am going to keep pumping after, it's just a lot of work! Feed, feed, formula, pump. Gah! I'll really not have time for anything else anymore!

@Thehistoryofus: thanks for the suggestion of massaging during feedings. I haven't tried this and will try it at our next session.

If you're worried about feeding formula in the long term, then you could pump in addition to the breastfeeding in order to keep up your supply. Also, a LC visit is probably a good idea, b/c she can watch you while your baby feeds, and she might be able to figure out if something is going wrong so that the baby isn't getting enough food. Please don't beat yourself up over using formula for the time being though. It's really not the evil that some people make it out to be!

Aw, I'm really sorry. I know how stressful weight gain issues can be. I second going to an LC - maybe they will be able to add some insight - it couldn't hurt, right? Maybe you have a slow flow? Have you ever pumped to see how much you are producing? The only other thing I would suggest is to wake her every 3 hours to feed (I know, I know, precious night time sleep...)

PS, you mean she lost 4 oz, right (not 4 lbs?)

Aw I'm sorry you are going through this. It sounds like your Ped is supporting you, but yes I think seeing a LC would be a good step. They might be able to offer a few suggestions to help with latch, etc. Are you massaging your breasts while feeding? That can help stimulate milk flow.

@regberadaisy: I'm just putting her on formula now, I'm not taking her off of formula now. I'm wondering if there is something else I should be doing for the future. I want to be able to exclusively breastfeed at some point again.

I guess my question is why would you take her off formula if even on formula she is losing weight? What do you think seeing a LC would change?

And I hope through the internet it's not sounding "attacky", that is def not the intent.

Have you considered pumping and feeding her via bottle so you know how much she is getting in lieu of formula if you want to take her off formula?

P.S. How often is she feeding? We loosely follow the 2hr rule even with supplementing. If she's hungry we feed her.

We went to the doctor (for the 3rd time since she was born 3 weeks ago) today for a weight check. She lost 4oz since our last visit. Seriously bummed. I took all of the suggestions from her doctor and spaced out the feedings a bit, didn't let her stay on for more than a half hour, etc. It didn't help. I swear, it seems like the girl is eating. She has lots of wet and soiled diapers and I can hear her swallowing noises.

Her pediatrician did blood work on her to make sure there was nothing wrong there and she's perfectly healthy. He did muscle and reflex tests, as well and saw no issues.

He put me on a feeding regimen for her of 10 minutes on one side, 10 minutes on the other side, 10 minutes on formula (or 2oz, whichever comes first). I asked about feeding her the pumped milk I have in the freezer but he wants her on formula to make sure she's getting the calories she needs.

If you were in this situation, what would you do to try to get back off of formula at some point? Do you think getting an appointment with a lactation consultant would be a good step? To make sure she is eating properly when she is breastfeeding? I'm not sure that will help considering she is obviously getting enough liquids, noted through the diapers.
