@graceandjoy: @BadgerMom: Hah hah, yes! I'm expecting unfortunately to get quite a lot of use out of them, at least until everyone in the household is old enough to aim their puke!

@periwinklebee:  I predict you'll be happy to have both of those items on hand even after this event is a long ways in the rear view. They're both lifesavers lol.

I know it's been awhile, but just wanted to update for potential future reference that bio-kleen + a bissell pet spot cleaner that was on lightening deal did a great job of cleaning up the mess - both out of rugs and the couch - fairly easily. Infinitely superior to hand scrubbing. You all give awesome advice!

And @LCTBQE: thank goodness, DH and I dodged this bullet!

Lay down a bunch of towels and sheets on the floors and furniture and make him stay in one room! Then you can just throw the towels and sheets in the wash and not be scrubbing. I was also gonna say buy a little green machine steam cleaner on a Black Friday deal and make your hubby steam it all, but looks like you got something like that! Fingers crossed it passes soon, you poor woman!

I actually found that baking soda worked best. I think you make a thick slurry, cake it on, let it dry (for hours) and then vacuum it up.

@Baby Boy Mom: I'm sold, ugh, can't imagine cleaning up that mess.

And I need it, LO puked all night and now on day 3 of puking everywhere. Ugh... what ever happened to 24 hours bugs, whenever LO is sick it inevitably seems to be for a week

@pachamama: hah hah, little kids live so much in the moment. Puking one second and super cheerful the next... whereas I'm spending every moment feeling sorry for myself 😂

@pachamama: Short answer- I have 3 kids... :) Longer answer- one of the older kids wet the bed the same morning I went into labor with number 3. Early labor- sprayed biokleen on the sheets, protector etc. Couple hours later unexpectedly had baby at home, on the mattress without the protector on it...more biokleen...

Thank you all so much! I found a handheld carpet cleaner on a lightening deal with same day delivery that I'm going to try as a first pass (the one for pets @graceandjoy: and @bhbee: - great point, if it works on dog puke and poo, should be great for toddler messes). Figure it will be good to have on hand for future repeats of baby and toddler messes - great to hear positive experiences from @gotkimchi: and @BadgerMom:. If it doesn't cut it I will invest in professional cleaning (@Madison43: super good to know about stomach acid being really bad - I like the rugs and would like them to last!). But will be easier to find someone with availability when not a holiday week, so hopefully the handheld carpet cleaner will at least keep anything from getting too set in the rug in the meantime.

@crazydoglady: hah, hah, I think being so pregnant was mostly making me think, how on earth would i deal with this if I had to sequester myself with a newborn. DH would not do a good job of cleaning the mess up himself 😂 . You guys have given me the answer - lol - hire a professional to clean it up...

There's an enzyme cleaner called bio-kleen bac out. It is good for all bodily fluids (ask me how I know :silly: )...spray a lot, let sit, clean, repeat.

I have a Bissell spot cleaner for pets... I agree with @bhbee: that you may want to look into pet sprays; I pretty much use those interchangeable for pets and bad kid messes. I feel like they're tough enough to sanitize and deodorize.

We have a Hoover cleaner we use for things like this - I agree you need something where you can get it wet and suck it back up so either rent a cleaner, buy one, or call a pro. We spent like $120 on ours and I’ve never looked back. It gets way more use then I thought. I just cleaned up puke the other day 🤢

If you don’t want to call a professional as suggested above, I think you at least need a hand held carpet cleaner. I’ve found hand cleaning this kind of stuff almost impossible. You need something to suck out all the grossness. We use nature’s miracle (made for pet stains) and/or bacout for any “body fluid” messes along with the bissel carpet cleaner.

My best luck has been with pet mess cleaners - but I’d also go for professional help if you can swing it. I’ve only done 1-2 areas at once and I’m sure this is overwhelming, I’m so sorry. When we all got a stomach bug this year my 4yo did make it to the bathroom after the first time and it was amazing!

ETA I also used that Lysol laundry sanitizer on anything washable.

That sucks! If you like your area rugs, I would get them professionally cleaned ASAP (assuming you don’t have your own shampooer). We recently learned that hard way that stomach acid from puke makes stains in carpet incredibly hard to get out. Our carpet guy tried his best and I still ended up tossing one - I can still see stains in the other, but it blends better. As an aside, my older daughter learning to throw up in the toilet (even the tub) was one of my greatest moments as a parent!

My toddler came down with a stomach virus today - despite being sick he seemed to have boundless energy and spent the day running around the house puking on everything. At least a dozen different spots on area rugs, couch, through a sheet and mattress protector. DH spent the better part of the day chasing him around trying to get him to puke in a bowl or bag 😂, and I spent the day, literally hours, scrubbing puke: tried carpet cleaner (folex), water, general purpose cleaner, upholstery cleaner, etc... But I still feel grossed out and like it's not as clean as I would like from hand scrubbing, How do I get this all to come really clean? Do I need to rent or buy some kind of carpet shampooer? Scrub with something else?

I'm sorry, it's gross. But would love tips from anyone who's dealt with a house covered in toddler (or pet) puke - this is a first and I'm pretty sure I'm doing something wrong. I swear the proudest day of my parenting life will be when my kids are finally old enough to puke in the toilet!
