I usually put it down on the counter, they're granite so I don't worry about damaging them. I always put the lid a tiny bit over the edge so that it doesn't create a vacuum.

Handle side up on an empty burner if it's clean/not yet used.

On the counter, handle side down, if it's dirty and I'll still need it.

Pots can be moved just fine.

It's just the domed shape of a lid and the air that gets trapped in them that can cause a vacuum.

@MaryM: Oh my, just researched this and the same goes for hot dishes out of the stove, too. I always put them on top of the stove when I take them out of the oven. It never dawned on me this could crack the stovetop! So glad you mentioned this. :)

@MaryM:  That would be rather unfortunate!!!

Usually my burners are all full. I have a cast iron pan that I keep up there all the time (too heavy to move around), and then I'm using at least 2 pots/pans, if not all 4.

@MsLipGloss: Apparently I just need to bring my cutting board over to the side of the stove! That would actually work out great... it's already dirty, and it will protect my counters...

@Anagram: Yes, my lids are always pretty splatter-y, I hate setting them down anywhere :(

@MaryM: I always remove pots from the hot burners and move them to a "cold" burner out of the way when they are done cooking and nothing has ever happened like that? What should I do then if the pot is done cooking and I want it off the heat? I hadn't realized this was an issue with a glass top stove.

I usually just set it on the stove or cutting board if it is out.

I do the same as SpanielLove. Upside down on the counter with a towel/potholder

We have a glass top so I can't sit it on an empty burner. If you set a hot lid on a cold burner it can create a vacuum and you can shatter the whole top of the stove.

Since I usually pick it up with a towel, I just rest it upside down on the towel on the counter. That way things don't drip onto the counter. The towel makes it easy to pick up again if it's hot.

Haha I get annoyed by this every time I cook, too!!

I usually place it either in the sink (if it's messy) or on an empty burner (if it's clean). If all my burners are taken up I'll just put it in the sink.

@swurlygurl: I have that issue, too. I always put it on an empty burner, but I get annoyed that I have to do that, because 1)burners aren't clean and I imagine the yuckiness falling into the food when I put it back on the pot 2) then the area under the burner gets random drippings when I'm not even cooking over that area, giving me more area to clean. yuck.

Especially if it's something that bubbles up and splatters on the lid (like curry suace or pasta sauce), then I reallly don't want to lay it on the burner.

I don't cook a lot, but when I do . . .

I put the lid on one of the burners I am not using (we have a large cook top, so unless it's a huge lid, it usually fits). For the larger lids, I just put them on the cutting board while I stir/Swedish Chef it up!

I don't know if I'm missing something, or just dense, but wtf do you do with a pot/pan lid while you're cooking? Obviously, the idea is to leave it on the pot. But what about when you need to take it off for a couple minutes to turn, stir, add spices, etc? I can't just put it on my counter because they would get damaged. I try to put it on the counter upside down, but then I burn my hand.

Luckily (??) I usually have a stack of dirty dishes nearby that I can set it on, but not always, and I'm trying to be better about getting my dishes done. Is there like a lid holder or something I should have? A combo spoon rest/lid holder?

I feel like I'm missing something, because I'm always so confused about the logistics of this stupid hot lid...
