My dog is also hard to deal with because he has separation anxiety so we don't like to leave him alone. We gave a couple of people a key to our house so we'd have options of people to call when I went into labor. It ended up being in the middle of the night and we called good friends on the family to come get him in the morning, they know him really well so I felt comfortable with it. And then after LO was born he switched between my parents and DH's.

@mediagirl: Hhhmhh... that definitely does make things more complicated. I guess have a conversation with your parents and see how comfortable they would be with letting the dogs sleep with them. If they aren't comfortable with that maybe try to look online for local petsitters that you could hire?

We took our dog to my FIL's house the day of my induction and picked him up a week later. We went to the hospital on Tuesday, got back on Saturday. The first few days were crazy so we just asked if the dog could stay a few extra days!

We live about 15 minutes from the hospital, so we'll leave the dogs at home (we have a doggy door for them to go in and out to do their business). Hubs will come home to feed them, and we have friends who live nearby who can walk them. If all goes as planned, I'll deliver vaginally and we'll be home after a couple of days.

@mamabolt: Yeah, it's a dilemma I wasn't really thinking about when we got them....I think if I get admitted late, we can put them in their crates for one night. If I give birth early enough, I could send him home for the night so my parents don't have to suffer through sleeping with the dogs. I just want to make sure I'm comfortable being there without him before we make that decision (hello last minute decision!!)

@mamamoose: they are both rescue dogs. The older one does not do well in her crate (she never lays down in it, just paces, pees and barks the whole time she's in it). She has to go in it when no one is home, though because otherwise she destroys things and goes to the bathroom all over the house or in whatever room she is sequestered to. Unfortunately this is our life with rescue pups. Our normal pet sitter is a Boston lover and allows them to sleep with her at her house. We love her so much. :)

Could you find another dog sitter?

Can your dogs not sleep in their crates for a couple of nights? It seems silly to make other arrangements when your parents will be at your house and can handle feeding the pups and let them out. But I do think it's a lot to ask of them (or any one) to let the dogs sleep with them.

I'm not sure honestly. My parents live 2.5 hours away and MIL lives 4 hours away, and I'm not sure what their plans are for while I'm in labor...whether they will be traveling down here to wait at the house or coming to visit after baby is here. If they don't plan on coming down while I'm in labor, we may ask our neighbors to look in on the pets, but our dog is very high spirited and can be overwhelming for people to handle. When we travel we typically board him, but that may not be an option on short notice or at strange hours. Gah, I'm going to put DH in charge of figuring this all out.

MY in laws are only around the corner so they came and got our pup while I went into the hospital, they dropped him off at the house before we got home so he was there to welcome his little sister home. He's been great with her since day one.

My in laws are planning on picking up our dog when we go to the hospital and will keep her for a week or so until we are settled in with the new baby. They love our dog and she loves them, so it works out perfectly.

Our plan is to have in-laws (our dog sitters) come pick them up and take them back to their place before coming to the hospital to see baby. They'll probably watch them for a few days, but I want the dogs back before FIL fattens them up too much and also so that dogs can get easily adjusted to baby.

We planned to board our dogs with their usual doggie daycare but I was at the hospital less than 36 hours so we ended up just keeping them at home in their usual method with my husband going home twice to feed and give them some attention in our absence.

Can your usual sitter recommend a substitute?

Our dog can hold it for a long time, so it's not the same situation as you. (And dog does not sleep with us). My Mom slept at our house the first night and walked the dog. From then on, DH went home overnights to walk the dog. She was in the crate a little extra long, but it was okay. Oh, and we arranged to have a neighbour walk the dog in case my labour was really long, but it wasnt so we didnt need him.

My mom was at the house and thankfully is a dog person. My husband though ended up sleeping at home and not in the hospital. There was really no place for him to sleep that he would have gotten sleep and we live only 5-10 min away so he just went home and cared for the dogs. He was back and forth a couple times during the day to the house and hospital but for us it wasn't a big deal. The day I gave birth though I was in labor for 12 hours at the hospital and he stayed the whole time then and my mom dealt with the dogs then.

We'll probably board our dog. He's social and doesn't have any health problems, so we're not worried that he'll get sick. If he does, someone will take him to the vet afterwards.

If you have dogs, what did you plan to do with them while you were at the hospital for your labor and post care? We have two high maintenance dogs whose normal sitter will be away when our baby is due. My parents are coming to stay at our house while we're in the hospital but, they're not really dog people.

Our dogs sleep with us and go into their crates when we are away from the house. One of them is getting old and needs to go outside every 2 hours or she'll pee on the carpet. Should we just leave these things to my parents to deal with and say, ps...they'll be sleeping with you? Or should we try a plan B? I really don't want to have to worry about dogs coming home from a kennel (sick, scared, who knows what) when we have a newborn in the house.

What would you do/did you do?
