@.twist.: We're painting the walls white.... thats about as far as Ive gotten. lol. I also ordered 2 reclaimed pink tiles off ebay to replace the missing two over the sink. We're keeping the pink and burgundy for now.

ETA: I'm actually kind of jealous!!!

I think you should totally embrace the vintage vibe!! I like the items you've picked so far. I did a search for "vintage pink bathroom" on Pinterest, and found these ideas below. I think it could be really cute and fun! If anything, maybe you could just paint the burgundy trim tile black. That would be super cheap and a LOT less work, and probably make a big impact.

Photos are from this website: http://retrorenovation.com/2013/03/12/pink-black-bathroom-makeover/

Looking forward to seeing what you do!

@skibobrown: nice! Let me know how it goes. Ours is 1950 blue. Blue tiles, blue tub, blue seashell sinks. Niiice. But that's not on the reno list for another 2-3 years. :(

@honeybear: I'm glad someone likes pink bathrooms. Maybe they'll want to buy all of my pink tile, toilet, and sink when I *rip them out*.

For yours I like white walls with pictures on the wall that incorporate the color of the trim tile. We'll be gut renovating 2 of our 1950's bathrooms next summer. There's just no way around it in our case.

@loveisstrange: I would paint the pink tile.. I think Rust-Oleum has a tub/tile epoxy paint that works for washrooms. I have seen it done on a few of the blogs I follow. It shouldn't break the bank. I know it is a bitch to apply but it would get rid of the pink/burgundy issue.

If that is a no-go for you, I like the pics that @.twist.: posted.

Also, pending how much of a DIY'r you are .. there are easy ways to make that kind of door look like a panel door. When painted white - you couldn't tell.

@loveisstrange: yeah, I don't mind either of the floors they chose. Unfortunately none of my towels match these bathrooms (aqua-we just moved).

The original kitchen was white wall tile with black accents. It was uncovered when the paneling in there was removed.

Oh, and the downstairs bathroom (with the burgundy accents) is a very pale pink, not white as I originally thought.

I feel your pink pain ;). Both bathrooms in our house are pink (upper is pink and black, lower is more salmon and burgundy).

For the salmon and burgundy, we left the walls white and I painted a cherry blossom mural above the tub.

For the pink and black, I'm planning on painting the walls Benjamin Moore Revere Pewter, and probably put up the black shelves I had in our old house. We need to rip out the vanity (replace with one from Ikea) and paint the frame of the medicine cabinet white.

I think there's a tile store in NJ that specializes in all shades of retro pink tile, if you're looking to fill in the spots left from the holders.

My parents have that tile, but with black trim. They painted the walls a very light grey.

I would take a trip to a paint store like Sherwin Williams or Benjamin Moore and seek their advice on painting the burgandy tiles. We have painted tiles in our kitchen (done before we purchased our house) on the backsplash. And while it's not wet like the bathroom, we do routinely wash them and get them steamed up near the cooktop without any issues.

I think you have to embrace the burgundy and pink until it can be replaced. :) I sympathize. I had pea-soup (!) green (!!) carpet (!!!) in my bedroom as a pre-teen and teenager and the only way to not feel depressed about life when I was in that space was to find a duvet with a big tropical floral print that incorporated the hideous color and made it look like someone picked that carpet on purpose. I've never been a floral print fan.

If you're getting accessories/fixtures/a mirror, I'd go with things that have a warm brass/gold-colored metal. A slightly pink white on the walls would be good. I'd also paint the doors and try to find some funky vintage door handles.

Also, this site is a fun way to waste a few minutes: http://savethepinkbathrooms.com/

@loveisstrange: Ugh...closets...I forgot about those doors!! We have quite a few of those to replace, as well. Two double-doors in the remaining bedrooms and one in the laundry room. None in the bathrooms, though; I guess that's the one perk of not having bathroom closets?

I'd pain the walls white or light gray, with some black and white art. The other thought is to get a shower curtain with more pizazz. I like yours, but a shower curtain makes such a difference in a bathroom. We have a bathroom at the end of our hall upstairs which was blah. I got a new shower curtain, and I smile almost every time I see it.

@bunnylovesbear: Ours was built in 48. We have 6 closets, 2 bedrooms, a bathroom and a basement. Not to mention that someone put carpet in the house at some point and cut like an inch off the bottom of all of them.

@Dandelion: Hahaha, I do think the one on the wall is Martha Stewart. The photo of the bathroom is from Apartment Therapy. Im not sure if we could rip out JUST the burgundy tiles. Hmmm.... Id almost be afraid to damage the pink ones.

I'd try painting the burgundy trim and make it black. If you're worried about it not working for areas that get wet all time, you could just leave the part in the shower as-is, since it will be covered by the curtain.

@loveisstrange: My house was built in 1930, and we have those same awful doors!! We've been replacing them one at a time. When we redid our son's nursery, he got a new door. When we redid our downstairs bathroom, it got a new door. We also replaced the one separating our living room from the front sunroom with a 12-pane glass door, but we got a great deal on that one. We still have two bedrooms, a bathroom, the laundry room, and the basement doors to replace. siiigh.

I agree with the idea to paint the walls a light gray. I think that would look really nice. I'd also look into seeing if it were possible to remove only the darker tiles, but I imagine that would be too difficult without damaging the rest of the tile/wall.

I would do white walls, or a really light grey wall above the tiles. I also like the idea of paining the trim of the tiles the same dark grey in the rug.

These are just a few quick pics I found.

Ultimately, you all are probably right. Maybe white walls and some art? There's a hexagon mirror normally hanging there, but I was hoping to find something long, to cover the 2 missing places where the built-in soap dishes used to be.

Would you go black and white art, or something colorful?

@yoursilverlining: Dude, those awful doors are every. single. door in our house. They're terrible. I hate them so much. lol. Unfortunately, we can't swing replacing them all right now. Id hate to just do one. We've decided to live with the pink tile for now, until we can swing tearing all of it out and putting something else in. Im just trying to minimize the crazy pink-ness for now. lol. We have a pink kitchen too! Fun times.

I have that same kind of tile in my bathroom, but (thankfully!) the original 1967 owners chose white, not pink. We also had those same kind of doors and we painted them white, which made a HUGE difference. I think in general I would just go light light light on everything to keep it bright in there.

ETA: I agree with @BakerBee: about the walls... I think I'd just paint them white.

The stencil is actually a wallpaper, I think. I remember seeing it on a blog recently - I'll do some poking around.

I have the shower curtain you posted and it's gorgeous in person! Another option would be a white waffle curtain with your last initial monogrammed on it.

With all that said, I think that the walls should be white ultimately. You don't want to go too busy and between the mat and the bright walls, I worry it might be overwhelming.
