@PurplePumps: Yeah, that is definitely one of the options. If we decide to go with the chair/rug/coffee table option, we don't have the funds to do it all - it would probably be a work in progress. I like your suggestion of putting in a light where we won't crack our heads open and then living with it for a while. I'm just tired of my kids playing a game where the Mickey table gets pushed all over the kitchen while they eat their breakfast.

I love the idea of a seating area and bar stools.

I don't cook (running joke is I can burn water), but my husband does, his mom does, and we have lived together off and on since Mr. Frog and I got together. The cooking is something they highly enjoy, and they like having people watch, help, taste, or just to talk to. It's a very social thing that I'm kind of jealous of.

It would be fantastic to have an area like that to be a part of what is going on in the kitchen, yet be comfortable and out of the way.

I second the idea for barstools too- more spots for butts and yet saves on space. I love ours.

I'd get a new light fixture so no one hits their head and then just leave it open until you figure out if you need to do anything with the space. If you don't need extra dining or seating area, doing anything with the space is just forced and cluttered to me.

We have a really similar setup in our house. We have a half wall instead of the railing, but otherwise exactly the same with the slider and the counter. We put our kitchen table in ours because we don't have a dining room table and it's easier for us.

Your idea of doing the chairs is probably what will work best for you guys. But if you want an alternate idea, what about a freestanding banquette? Kinda like this but obviously not the same shape: http://www.houzz.com/photos/75439/Dining-Room-modern-dining-room-boston

I'd do 4 chairs, around a coffee table.

I think barstools at the counter and turning the space into a little coffee nook could be fun!

I think a sitting area would be great! Barstools for breakfast/lunch are a good idea, if you eat all your family meals when together in the dining room I don't think you "need" another table/chairs.

Maybe think ahead to when the kids are older and in school - this could be a homework area for them while you are making dinner?

A cosy sitting area sounds nice, especially if it will get more use that way.

I would do chairs instead of a couch - I like the wicker ones in the link you posted - makes it more casual

Decorating Bees, I need your help. We don’t know what to do with the breakfast nook in our kitchen. We have a formal dining room and an eat in kitchen. We only have one table and it is in the dining room. We have a small kids table in the eat in kitchen - primarily to keep from knocking into the light fixture but the kids like to eat breakfast and lunch in there. We don’t have a lot of money to spend and I just can’t commit to any of the tables we’ve seen. We started thinking outside the box last night and my husband wondered if we can turn it into a sitting area. He thinks we don’t really need a table in there when all family meals are at the dining room table. I think those corner banquet bench seats are cool but with the railing on the left that opens into the family room and the sliding glass doors - it doesn’t seem possible. The dining room is just right around the corner - you can see the dining room from the eat in kitchen so my husband things 2 tables will just look weird.

So, here is what I am thinking. Get 2 or 3 bar stools for the kids (they are 5 & 2 1/2) to eat at the kitchen counter in the morning. Buy a cool coffee table (we love zinc tables) and a small loveseat or a couple comfy chairs and possibly a rug and get rid of the black ceiling fixture.
Kind of like these:
http://www.houzz.com/photos/kitchen/sitting-area-

Are we nuts? Does anyone have any other ideas?
