Thanks for the input, @smurfette, @corduroy, @catomd00, & @simplyfelicity. I appreciate it. I'm 5 weeks today, the appointment is for 8 weeks. Maybe I'll call and ask. It would help to know if an ultrasound will be done then, as DH wants to be there for those

It really depends on the office. My first appointment was at 8 weeks (they recommend 10 weeks) and they recorded my family history, blood work, did a cervical check and that was about it. My first ultrasound was scheduled for 12 weeks (I switched from a different OB that did first appointment at 12 weeks and first ultrasound at 20 weeks.) I ended up spotting at 10 weeks, went in for an early ultrasound and found out I had a blighted ovum. Anyway, don't want to be a Debbie Downer but I just wanted to share my experience with an OB that doesn't do an appointment or ultrasound until later.

I had an ultrasound (both abdominal then transvaginal). After that I had a regular gyno exam with Pap smear and talked to the doc about family history, what to expect throughout the pregnancy and answered all our questions. Then was sent to the lab for blood work.

My first appointment was for recording health background only. It was actually over the phone for this pregnancy - in person for my last. Then they ordered blood work and urine test which kind of negated the phone aspect. I go back at 8 weeks for the first US. Ask the office what to expect when you call.

Mine was at 5 or 6 weeks, so they did a urine confirmation of the pregnancy. Doctor checked that my cervix was closed. Then just answered my questions. I went back between 8 and 9 weeks and had an ultrasound. Then met with the OB nurse and answered a ton of questions/information.

It's probably safe to assume you will have a pap since you are past due, weight and blood pressure, family history, general pregnancy discussion (dos and donts, when to call, etc), a urine test, and blood work (get usef to needles this wont be the last). You may also have an ultrasound but it seems like every doctor is different. Congrats!

@MrsKMM: at my appt, my first visit was with the nurse practitioner. I peed in a cup, filled out some paperwork, we talked about health and family history, and I had bloodwork done. Congrats!!!!! Can't remember if you remember who I am, but My lips are zipped ;)

How far along are you? I had my first appointments at 8 weeks. He asked me a bunch of questions about my history, confirmed the pregnancy with an ultrasound, took my weight, height, and had me pee in a cup. I think I also had a bunch of blood drawn for tests. And they may give you a flu shot if you haven't had one yet.

Oh and they may do a pap smear.

It's a good time to ask questions and get a feel for the office and doctor. And they'll go over the dos and don'ts with you.

Congrats and good luck!

Not sure how many weeks you'll be but these may or may not be a part of the appt. they should be able to tell you what to expect when you make the appt though!

Urine test
Blood test
Weight and blood pressure
Internal exam
Family and medical history
Rx for prenatal vitamins if you're not already taking them
Dos and donts
What to expect for upcoming appts and what tests to think about opting in or out of

DH and I moved out of state almost 3 months ago, and to be honest I've slacked on finding new doctors. :meh: While we only moved to the next state over, it's still quite a drive to my original doctors. I have been researching obgyns since before my bfp, but now it's time! I've found a place I'd like to try that has really good reviews, is close by, and is currently accepting new patients. Calling tomorrow!

This may be a silly question, but what can I expect at my first appointment? I know they will confirm pg with a test (I hate needles!) What else occurs? Is this where I can ask my billion questions? Will we just talk about do's and don't's? I'm the kind of person who needs to know what to expect
