@blackbird: Definitely! I wonder if REs ever check Folate levels...

@vegmama, oh definitely!

I dunno, I've known a fair amount of people now who only carry to term when they're on the proper meds for MTHFR....one article is not enough to convince me. I think the folic acid thing is big. If you can't absorb folic acid.....it's certainly a factor.

@Vegmama: I have no qualms with extra precautions. Definitely go with whatever your RE (whom you trust) recommends. :heart:

@FliegepilzHut: Sure, for things like blood clots. But, for recurrent pregnancy losses, it is most definitely a concern.

ETA: I see that this article suggests that it's not a factor. I think MANY REs and doctors would disagree. And, there's a reason that people with this mutation are put on thinners and different folic acid supplements during pregnancy.

Hmm... Here's an article that says basically not to worry...at all...about this. Sounds like good news to me!

@blackbird: It's scary to find this out AFTER having my baby. Last night, we were talking about how hard we tried to get pregnant (only to have a m/c), and then how long it took us to conceive our daughter. I had no idea I had this mutation, and since folic acid is so important for the neural tube, I'm so thankful everything turned out ok.

My doctor is an MD, but takes a more naturopath approach to things, so I'm interested to see what she thinks.

I have this. They told me it's only an issue while pregnant, so I take a baby aspirin but it hasn't affected anything else in my life. I'm on baby aspirin plus Folgard, which is a folic acid supplement that is something like 10x the amount a normal person can take in. MTHFR can make you unable to absorb folic acid like everyone else.

I'm not sure I have an answer for you...but has anyone in your family had blood clots? I would think your compound heterozygosity would give you an increase risk of deep vein thrombosis...probably under "normal" high-risk circumstances, like long flights/car-rides, surgery, or prolonged immobility for some other reason. Pregnancy and BCPs also place you higher risk for developing clots. I wonder if they will suggest blood thinners like heparin for you while TTC in the future?

Got my test results from an intense blood workup yesterday. Notes from my doctor said that I need to make an appointment to come in and talk about results.

Part of what she delivered was a discovery of compound heterozygous MTHFR mutations.

Is this only important to acknowledge while TTC? My first pregnancy ended in m/c, and it took us awhile to finally get pregnant again with our daughter. I'm not TTC now, but I wonder if my doc will recommend a plan for the future.

I know there are bees here with this issue, and I'd love to know what to expect.
