@MrsADS: my first visit was pretty boring but lengthy. They did a pelvic exam which I wasn't expecting (I had had one done a few weeks earlier at my annual exam!), and gave me paperwork and scripts for my first trimester screening (we did the NT scan & cystic fibrosis testing).

They reviewed info like when I would have appointments and dos and donts during pregnancy, and gave me a booklet/reference guide that was very helpful (what medications I can't take, safe food handling tips and so forth).

I asked about morning sickness remedies because it was pretty bad around 8 weeks & got a zofran script.

I also asked what constitued as an emergency and warranted an after hours and/or weekend call and what could wait until the next business day.

i didn't have too many questions, but i did ask how many OBs were in the practice and whether i would be having appointments with all of them. these things are nice to know since we sometimes can't be sure of which OB will be on call (NA if there is a schedule c-section/induction).

i also asked about medications (although you have probably covered this), coffee and alcohol. i ask these mostly to get a feel for the OB's philosophy.

i also asked if they are okay with me having a doula (not so much because i thought they would say so, but again to get a feel for them and to put them on notice that i might have one).

I had my first OB appointment after graduating from my RE at 10 weeks. They did an ultrasound to see if the baby was measuring on track, then went over different genetic testing that was offered as well as gave me papers and went over pregnancy symptoms, safe medications ect. She also gave me a bag of goodies and samples. I didn't really have many questions at that point except how often she wanted to see me. It was honestly so fun. After so many serious appointments with the RE it was the first time we felt like a normal pregnant couple. Congrats!

I actually saw a midwife practice, so I am not sure how it compares to an OBGYN. My first appointment was a lot of talking. They took my medical history, discussed what to expect, how I was feeling, etc. I probably asked about things like frequency of visits, timeline of certain procedures, what to avoid, how to deal with morning sickness, any concerns regarding travel or work.

One thing I did was create a list on my phone that I could add questions to as I thought of them. That way at the end of each appointment I could pull out my phone and ask everything and not forget things.

at my first visit, i saw a nurse practitioner and...didn't really have any questions. They gave me the do/do not list, the medications, and scheduled me for a scan. Asked how i was feeling, etc.

I am "graduating" from my RE this week to my OB (woohoo!). So I am thinking I will be scheduled for my first prenatal OB visit shortly thereafter. I will be about 9-10 weeks at the time.

What happened at your first OB visit? I have already had a lot of ultrasounds at the RE's office. I'm assuming bloodwork, physical, history, etc. but not sure about other stuff.

What questions did you ask your OB at your first visit? I am trying to be prepared. I have gone to this doctor as my gyn for a couple of years but obviously it's different now.

I would love your suggestions!
