I had great success with gifting experiences to my son....he tends to gravitate towards "things" and I am trying to teach him that sometimes, you don't need things, you need experiences.

He's got a December birthday and I was trying to spread out the gift giving by giving him art lessons. He LOVED them, and even asked to go to a few weeks of art camp over the summer. I made a little package for him, with a calendar and art supplies so he could see he was going for 8 or so weeks.

@shellio: Thank you! We're not big gift givers either, so that does help. We're already going to Disney on Ice, so I guess having 1 gift each is enough. And I like that getting special treats count as a gift too!

We have similar birthday timing (1 Oct, 2 Nov, 1 Dec). We give significantly fewer gifts than most other people I know. The kids get one gift from parents on their birthday (we didn't used to do any but as they get older, they start to notice!) and for Christmas this year we are doing 3 gifts each, including from Santa so that might mean 1-2 from parents. They get plenty from several sets of grandparents. We sometimes give treats that they may not otherwise get, like fruit gummies. As the holiday season draws closer, I'm less likely to buy them something they need because it might make a good gift if we can put it off for a few weeks. Books are always appreciated. We buy used toys at a kids consignment shop and give those. Art supplies are good if your kids are into arts and crafts. We make a big deal about letting the birthday child choose an activity for us all to do, this week my 2 year old wanted to take a bath and ride her bike so that's what everyone did, my 3->4 year old will probably want to swim at the rec center in a few weeks which is always fun, and my oldest will turn 6 in a few weeks and usually likes to go skiing. Limiting the number of gifts is the main thing that has made it easier for us, though.

It's a great idea to buy used/second hand because you can get some more baby ish things without breaking the bank.

Honestly we go for a lot of things like chalk bubbles crafts bath stuff etc so it doesn't take up extra space.

@Foodnerd81: That's a good point, I like the mutual sharing thing since it's mostly 1 way sharing for now!

@snowjewelz: the one good thing about giving the little one things I know they will both want is reuse that to demonstrate why big sis has to share her toys. Like, well you like using her shopping cart/ chair/ whatever, so if you want her to share her toys, you need to share yours with her. It works occasionally.

My 4 year old is the only one in this house with a tablet- dh and I don’t even have one!

@Foodnerd81: I'm so glad you understand my struggles :silly: I feel like whatever toys I buy for her, unless it's really baby-ish, her big sister would also want it too! Like a shopping cart, DD1 would totally want too haha. So I feel like all my gifts planned for DD1 are ultimately all shareable... She won't even ever need a tablet b/c DD1 pretty much took mine iPad, so it's assumed that DD2 eventually will just take over DH's iPad! Maybe I'll just split DD1's stuff and pretend it's for DD2......... lol

My girls are almost 2.5 years apart plus the second ones bday is a week before Christmas- it’s really hard to come up with ideas! Things we have gotten her are mostly things that got ruined the first time around or things we didn’t have space for (moved from a condo to a house). So hits for the baby have been: fresh lift the flap books (many were torn by big sis); play shopping cart (bought used); outdoor push car (but now they fight over it); little tykes slide; anywhere chair (well, tj max versions, but we didn’t have one the first time). They also got a play kitchen to share for Christmas. And some small things like new blocks since we had never gotten them for big sister.

I’m alr day struggling thinking about this Christmas and her bday. I may ask relatives for a kindle fire for her since I think she would like it before she turns 3, but just turning two seems awfully young for it!

My DDs are exactly 2 years apart, birthdays are two weeks apart and in December. What can I get for her for gifts?! The only things I've really had to buy are shoes b/c her feet are smaller than DD1. I'd get her new toys but feel like it's wasteful to buy new toys for just her, plus she only wants her sister's stuff anyway... No room for a 2nd "anywhere chair" either.
